LAST TASKS

The big speeches are done. It's almost time to go.

In just a few minutes, Pope Benedict XVI meets with his cardinals this morning on the day he heads into retirement. No major speech is expected during his morning farewell with his closest advisers, just a simple greeting to each one inside the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace.

Shortly before 5 p.m. local time, Benedict will leave the palace for the last time as pope, head to the helipad on the top of the hill in the Vatican gardens and fly to the papal retreat south of Rome. And there, at 8 p.m. ? the exact moment Benedict's resignation goes into effect ? the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the pope now finished.

QUICKQUOTE: JOHN KERRY

"The United States sends its best wishes to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI as he leaves the Vatican after years of service and dedication to God, the Catholic Church, and world peace. As the papal conclave assembles, I look forward to continuing our important relationship with the Vatican and working with the new pope to foster dialogue and promote human rights and human dignity throughout the world."

? New U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, visiting Rome for a conference on Syria as part of his first diplomatic tour abroad.

___

A GLIMPSE INSIDE

Victor L. Simpson, Rome bureau chief for The Associated Press, reflects on his decades of covering the papacy:

___

One thing that sets the Vatican apart from other places: You can't just stroll around and poke your head in everywhere.

As many as 18 million people pass through Vatican territory each year, but their visits are effectively limited to St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican museums. Aside from the Vatican's 492 residents and its 4,700 employees, everyone else needs a pass, even to drop by the Vatican pharmacy for medicine not sold in Italy (bring a doctor's prescription please) or to buy back copies of the Vatican paper at the offices of L'Osservatore Romano.

After all these years, I still feel a tingle of excitement to be let in through the Bronze Door, escorted past Swiss Guards in full regalia, and taken up to the pope's apartment on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace for a papal audience with a dignitary. These meetings have given a rare peek inside Vatican diplomacy.

TOWN TOUR

The town where Benedict is spending his last hours as pope and his first hours as the first pontiff in 600 years to retire is one of several picturesque "castle towns" known as the "Castelli," less than an hour's drive from Rome. Nestled in the Alban Hills, southeast of Rome, it is an area that is volcanic in origin. One of the volcano's old craters became Lake Albano, whose shores include Castel Gandolfo.

The volcano's no longer active, but the Castelli area gets its share of earthquakes, generally fairly mild and doing no damage. The rich volcanic soil helps produce inexpensive white wines that are a favorite in local trattorie as well as in restaurants in Rome.

The town is older than Christianity. The papal residence grounds include ruins from an imperial Roman villa, which itself had been on the site of ancient temples built several centuries before the ancient Romans came to check out the cool breezes and views.

The sprawling papal grounds, which as Vatican property enjoy extraterritoriality, include a working farm. Coffee bars in town have been known to serve milk from the farm's cows. (Yes, it's already been said: "Holy Cow.")

GOODBYE, RED SHOES

The red shoes are being retired.

The Pope is giving up the trademark that briefly made him a fashion star, trading in his snappy ruby-red loafers for a pair of hand-crafted brown ones made for him by artisans in Mexico. He will wear those in retirement, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi says.

The flash of red sparked (unfounded) rumors he was wearing Prada and helped make him Esquire magazine's accessorizer of the year in 2007. The actual designer? An Italian craftsman who had previously created a pair for Pope John Paul II, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

A former Vatican official assured The Associated Press back in 2005 that Benedict was no clothes horse, advising that the pontiff "wouldn't know Gucci from Smoochi."

LAST DAY AS POPE

Pope Benedict XVI is making history today, becoming the first pontiff to retire in nearly 600 years.

Only a handful of popes have ever done so.

The last was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the Great Western Schism, a dispute among competing papal claimants. The most famous resignation was Pope Celestine V in 1294; Dante placed him in hell for it.

Benedict is saying farewell this morning to his closest advisers in Clementine Hall at the Apostolic Palace. Then shortly before 5 p.m., he will leave the palace for the last time as pope and fly by helicopter to the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.

Exactly at 8 p.m. ? when his resignation takes effect ? the doors at Castel Gandolfo will close and the papacy that began on April 19, 2005, will come to an end.

First Gaza rocket in 3 months rattles cease-fire

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Gaza militants on Tuesday fired a rocket into Israel for the first time in three months, rattling a cross-border truce that has held since Israel's military offensive against the Hamas-run territory.

Israel closed Gaza's main cargo crossing until further notice, an apparent warning to Gaza's Hamas rulers to clamp down on rocket squads.

"Quiet will be met with quiet, missiles will be met with a response," said Israeli President Shimon Peres, adding that he believes both sides "have a deep interest in lowering the flames."

Militants claiming affiliation with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah, movement took responsibility.

They said in an email to journalists that they fired the rocket to avenge the death of a Palestinian in Israeli custody. It was impossible to independently verify the claim of responsibility.

The detainee, Arafat Jaradat, 30, died over the weekend after interrogation by Israel's Shin Bet security services. Palestinian officials, citing an autopsy, said the detainee was tortured, while Israel says more tests are needed to determine the cause of death.

U.N. political chief Jeffrey Feltman called for a independent investigation into Jaradat's death. He also called the rocket fire from Gaza "troubling" and appealed to Israel to "exercise maximum restraint."

Jaradat's death has sparked protests in the West Bank, including near the town of Bethlehem on Monday.

Two Palestinian teens, ages 13 and 16, were wounded in a confrontation with Israeli soldiers. The older boy was transferred to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital after being shot in the head and was in critical condition Tuesday, hooked up to a respirator, officials said.

The rocket from Gaza landed south of the Israeli city of Ashkelon early Tuesday, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. The rocket caused damage to a road but no injuries, he said.

It was the first rocket fired from Gaza since Israel's military offensive against rocket squads in the coastal strip last November. The Hamas militant group has ruled Gaza since ousting forces loyal to Abbas in 2007.

Over the past decade, Gaza militants have fired thousands of rockets and mortar shells at Israel, and Israel has responded with military strikes. In between periods of cross-border violence, informal cease-fires have taken hold.

Hamas government spokesman Ehab Ghussein denied a rocket was fired, indicating Hamas was trying to distance itself from the incident. In the past, militant splinter groups have fired rockets at times when Hamas tried to discourage such attacks.

Hamas has enforced an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire that ended eight days of fighting with Israel in November, when Gaza militants fired hundreds of rockets at Israel as the Israeli air force pounded targets in Gaza.

Israel's closing of the Kerem Shalom cargo crossing with Gaza appeared aimed at pressuring Hamas to prevent further rocket fire. Kerem Shalom is the main conduit for goods into Gaza, though smuggling of goods from Egypt through tunnels continues.

Under the cease-fire, Israel pledged to increase the movement of goods into Gaza, which has been subject to an Israeli blockade since the Hamas takeover. Until Tuesday's closure, Israel was permitting most consumer items into the coastal strip.

A military statement said the crossing would be reopened only "following a government directive."

In the West Bank, meanwhile, Abbas accused the Israeli military of using increasingly harsh methods to clamp down on Palestinian rock-throwing protests. There has been an increase in clashes between Palestinian stone throwers and Israeli troops in recent weeks

"We don't want tensions. We don't want escalation," Abbas said Tuesday, rejecting recent allegations by Israeli officials that he was stoking tensions for political gains.

In Monday evening's confrontation near Bethlehem, the Israeli military said protesters threw "improvised hand grenades" at a Jewish shrine in the area, endangering worshippers inside.

WADA says Pistorius substance isn't banned

Image: Oscar Pistorius in CourtGetty Images Contributor

Oscar Pistorius is accused of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14.

By GERALD IMRAY

updated 5:24 p.m. ET Feb. 27, 2013

JOHANNESBURG - The substance found in Oscar Pistorius' bedroom after the shooting death of his girlfriend was identified by his representatives Wednesday as Testis compositum - an herbal remedy they said is used for "muscle recovery." A product by that name also is sold as a sexual enhancer.

Testis compositum is marketed by some online retailers in both oral and injectable forms as a testosterone booster and sexual performance aid that contains the testicles, heart and embryo of pigs, among other ingredients. Some online retailers also say it can be used to treat fatigue.

At the Paralympian's bail hearing last week in the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, police said they found needles in Pistorius' bedroom along with the substance, which a detective initially named in court as testosterone. Prosecutors later withdrew that statement identifying the substance and said it had been sent for lab tests and couldn't be named until those tests were completed.

Pistorius spokeswoman Lunice Johnston said in an email to The Associated Press that the athlete's lawyers had confirmed that the substance is Testis compositum.

In the email, Johnston wrote that the product was being used "in aid of muscle recovery." She did not say whether the substance was the same as the product that is sold as a sex enhancer.

In court, Pistorius defense lawyer Barry Roux said the substance was not banned by sports authorities.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said its science department had already been made aware of the substance and that it wasn't banned.

"It would appear to be a homeopathic treatment, and these treatments are not prohibited by the list," WADA said in a statement to the AP.

Arne Ljungqvist, chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission, told the AP he had not heard of the product but that it sounded like "a real cocktail, all pointing in the same direction, namely having something to do with testosterone."

"This sounds to me like something that needs to be analyzed in order to make sure what it is," Ljungqvist said in a phone interview. "You cannot ban something simply on claims and names. It needs to be looked into. Even saying that it is testosterone boosting, it could contain some precursors. It needs to have some analysis."

Pieter Van Der Merwe, director of South Africa's Doping Control Laboratory in Bloemfontein, declined to comment on whether a sample from Pistorius had been sent to that laboratory for testing.

Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day shooting death of Steenkamp. He says he shot her by accident after mistaking her for an intruder in his home. Prosecutors allege he intended to kill her.

Police took Pistorius for a medical examination when he was arrested on Feb. 14, which included blood-alcohol tests, they said. The substance found in his bedroom was also being tested by police, who haven't released results.

Pistorius, a multiple Paralympic champion, underwent two doping tests in London last year around the Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee has said. He tested negative for any banned substances in both tests in August and September.

A product called Testis compositum is made by Biologische Heilmittel Heel GmbH, based in Baden-Baden, Germany. The company website says it is one of the world's leading makers of homeopathic combination medications.

A U.S. subsidiary, Heel USA Inc., advertises the product in tablet form only and spokeswoman Joan Sullivan said she didn't know if injectable versions are sold in other countries. Heel USA's website says the product provides temporary relief for men's "sexual weakness" and lack of stamina.

The U.S.-sold tablets contain 23 ingredients, including pig testicles, pig heart, pig embryo and pig adrenal gland, cortisone, ginseng and other botanicals. It also contains several minerals, according to a list Sullivan provided.

Charles Yesalis, a Penn State professor emeritus and expert on steroid use in sports, said animal steroids likely wouldn't have an athletic performance-enhancing effect unless taken in huge quantities. Even so, he said many elite athletes would be wary of using such supplements because they can be laced with banned substances and few would want to risk it.

The company website listed a South African subsidiary as ModHomCo (Pty) Ltd., based in Centurion, near Pretoria. That company couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Bad sleep 'dramatically' alters body

A run of poor sleep can have a potentially profound effect on the internal workings of the human body, say UK researchers.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

More than 700 genes were altered by the shift. Each contains the instructions for building a protein, so those that became more active produced more proteins - changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed - some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation.

Prof Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC: "There was quite a dramatic change in activity in many different kinds of genes."

Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected.

Prof Smith added: "Clearly sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds of damage appear to occur - hinting at what may lead to ill health.

"If we can't actually replenish and replace new cells, then that's going to lead to degenerative diseases."

He said many people may be even more sleep deprived in their daily lives than those in the study - suggesting these changes may be common.

Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the study was "interesting".

He said the key findings were the effects on inflammation and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes.

The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could eliminate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Dr Reddy said: "We don't know what the switch is that causes all these changes, but theoretically if you could switch it on or off, you might be able to get away without sleep.

"But my feeling is that sleep is fundamentally important to regenerating all cells."

Son Saves Family From Home Invasion/Attack ? 3 Thugs Enter ...

HOUSTON ?A 21-year-old man sprang into action to protect his family Thursday night when three suspects barged into their northwest Harris County home.

The young man was home with his mother and father in the 3900 block of Brook Garden when the armed men forced their way into the house around 8 p.m., according to Harris County Sheriff?s deputies.

Texas shooting

The family was in the middle of baking a cake, when there was a knock at the door.

?I see a young boy and I think it is a friend of my son so I open it a little bit,? the father explained. ?These guys push and out comes two more, they push me on the ground.?

After the father was down, the suspects went after the mother. That is when the son ran and got his dad?s gun. He opened fire and hit one of the suspects, who died in the back bedroom. The other two suspects fled the scene.

?I just hear a couple of times; boom, boom, boom. One young life is lost,? the dad said.

Deputies responding to the call spotted a vehicle carrying two men who matched the suspects? descriptions and pulled it over. The men were taken into custody for questioning.? (read more)

Tom Izzo Questions Michigan State's 'Grit' After 68-60 Loss To Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tom Izzo isn't happy with where his Michigan State Spartans are headed.

After being outscored by 14 points in the second half of Sunday's disappointing 68-60 loss at No. 18 Ohio State, the coach of the fourth-ranked Spartans took a hard look at his team as it heads into its final three regular-season games and the postseason.

"I haven't seen the same grit since after that Michigan game," he said of a 75-52 rout three games ago over the then-No. 4 Wolverines at home on Feb. 12. "We're not coming in not playing hard. We played hard against Indiana, they just beat us. I just thought today you give up that many layups ? 57 percent shooting in the second half ? they should run me out of town."

That isn't going to happen, not to a longtime coach with a 434-175 record, one national championship, six Final Fours and seven Big Ten titles.

But it's a mark of how dissatisfied he is with his team's play over the last three games that he continually reflected on what was plaguing the Spartans.

The loss crippled the Spartans' hopes of catching up with top-ranked Indiana, which now leads the Big Ten race by two full games with four remaining.

Freshman Gary Harris had 14 points, Derrick Nix 12 and Adreian Payne 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Spartans (22-6, 11-4), who have dropped two in a row after winning 11 of 12.

"Yeah, it's difficult. We put ourselves in a corner," Payne said of the situation the Spartans find themselves in in the Big Ten. "Now we have to win games. We have to win all of our games. It's tough, but it's something we've got to overcome."

There was plenty of blame to go around.

"It was a joint screw-up," Izzo added.

The Spartans have a week off until playing at archrival Michigan, then complete a stretch of four games against ranked opponents with a home game on March 7 against Wisconsin.

"The problem is when you're in a league where you play three, four or five ranked teams in a row, it takes its toll," Izzo said. "We did it a little early, and we're doing it again now. It all depends on how the schedule falls. You've got to survive."

Aaron Craft, who had scored just 17 points in his last three games, shredded the Spartans' defense on a succession of slashing drives right through the heart of the lane to score a career-high 21 points for the Buckeyes (20-7, 10-5).

The irony is that Michigan State did a terrific job on Deshaun Thomas, the Buckeye who came in leading the Big Ten in scoring at 20.1 points a game. He managed to make just 4 of 16 shots from the field, finishing with 14 points.

But Thomas did have a big 3-pointer that got Ohio State going after the Spartans built a 36-27 lead on Payne's baseline jumper 90 seconds into the second half.

Craft missed a shot that was tipped out to Thomas on the right side and he drained the long-range shot. It started a 24-5 run that flipped the game around.

"It was nine and they got the missed shot and Deshaun got the tip-out 3," Harris said. "That was the turning point of the game."

Yet the Spartans, who fell behind by as many as 10 points, weren't done yet.

Two foul shots apiece by Nix, Payne and Harris pulled them to 61-59, but Craft sped by Keith Appling for a lunging layup with 2:22 left.

After a free throw by Appling, Evan Ravenel, the only senior on Ohio State's roster, was fouled and he hit both shots to push the lead to 65-60 with 1:13 remaining.

Ravenel then blocked an Appling shot to end any possibility of a comeback.

Izzo was asked if this was a good time to have a week between games.

"It's a good time for a week off ? maybe two, three weeks," he said, his voice trailing off.

This could be a strenuous week for the Spartans, to say the least. The way Izzo talked, he might just be ready to push his players hard to impress upon them the importance of what lies ahead.

"That whole thing is going to fall on me," he said. "I've got to do a better job this week in practice. I am disappointed we haven't shown the grit we showed in the last two games ? which normally happens when you get fat and sassy. I think we've gotten a little bit of that."

Williams scores 46 to lead New Mexico past CSU

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- With 9 minutes left, New Mexico guard Kendall Williams trudged to the bench with a career-high 28 points - and four fouls.

While he caught his breath, No. 22 Colorado State built a six-point lead over the 16th-ranked Lobos.

Moby Arena was rocking and the Rams were rolling, about to extend the nation's third-longest home winning streak to 28 games.

Williams had other things in mind - and 18 points left to score.

"Luckily, some shots went in," said the junior guard from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who finished with a career-best 46 points - almost double his previous career high of 24 - in leading New Mexico to a 91-82 win Saturday.

Williams set a Mountain West Conference record with 10 3-pointers and his 46 points were the most in the 47-year-old arena, topping the 44 scored by Portland State's Freeman Williams on Nov. 29, 1975.

"He should be hands-down player of the week, I would think," Lobos coach Steve Alford deadpanned.

Williams helped the Lobos overcome that 70-64 deficit at the 6-minute mark by hitting a trio of 3-pointers, a dunk and seven free throws down the stretch as New Mexico outscored the Rams 27-12.

"He got on a roll today," Alford said. "And it was a 40-minute roll."

Actually, it was a 33-minute roll. He spent seven minutes on the bench in foul trouble.

"That's what's really impressive," Alford said. "He sat about a four-minute stretch there in the second half and still scores and does what he does. It's pretty amazing. But he did a great job in that last six minutes not picking up that fifth" foul.

Center Alex Kirk added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lobos (23-4, 10-2), who increased their lead in the conference race to two games over the Rams (21-5, 8-4).

Colton Iverson had 26 points and 15 boards for the Rams, who looked like they were going to move into a first-place tie atop the standings after taking a 70-64 lead at the 6-minute mark.

Williams' treys highlighted a 14-2 run that gave New Mexico a 78-72 lead before the Rams sent the Lobos to the line over the final two minutes.

"Well, that was a special night to watch," Alford said. "I told him that. I said I never had a 10-3 game, I never got to 46. Forty-two was the most I ever scored and eight 3s was the most I ever made in a game."

"There's not too many one-ups you can get on Coach Alford, especially in scoring," Williams said. "I might be on top of the world for the rest of the weekend."

Williams' previous career best was 24 points against Indiana State and New Mexico State earlier this season.

"The players kept feeding me the ball," said Williams, who had 15 family members, including his grandmother, in the stands. "It was really just a team effort, some of the shots I hit were tough. But if the teammates didn't put me in position and the coaches didn't put me in position, I wouldn't have had quite the night I had."

The Rams blamed themselves for Williams' big game.

"We had no answer for him," Rams coach Larry Eustachy said. "... He was completely unstoppable. I want to see film on how many of those shots were contested."

His bet is that not many were.

The Rams, who gave up 45 points to Air Force's Michael Lyons a week earlier, left Williams open early on while locking down Tony Snell, who scored 10 points Saturday after getting 23 in their first meeting last month.

"He hadn't been shooting well this year," Dorian Green said. "We gave him some uncontested looks, let him get hot. Guys are too good in our league to do that."

"We gave him open looks early," Wes Eikmeier added. "He got hot and then he was feeling it the rest of the night."

Green (20) and Eikmeier (22) gave the Rams three 20-point scorers in their losing effort. Eikmeier scored 11 straight to put the Rams ahead 55-50.

The Lobos quieted the crowd with a 12-6 run to regain the lead at 62-61, but Williams, less than a minute after returning to the lineup, was whistled for his fourth foul and took a seat at the nine-minute mark.

"I was real mad," Williams said. "My emotions were high, but (assistant coach Craig) Neal came over while Coach Alford was doing his thing and calmed me down and says, `You're going to have to bring it home, kid. Don't foul and get the shots that you need.' And that's exactly what I did."

The Rams were coming off a two-point loss at UNLV on Wednesday night that snapped their six-game winning streak, which began after a 66-61 loss to the Lobos in Albuquerque last month.

They hadn't lost at home since Nov. 11, 2012, to Southern Miss., which was coached at the time by Eustachy, who took the Rams job last offseason.

Williams' 10th 3-pointer - in 13 tries - broke the conference mark of nine set by several players, most recently UNLV's Chace Stanback against Central Arkansas on Dec. 28, 2011. It was a difficult shot from the right corner.

"Why not? Just throw it up there, had hit a few already," Williams said. "With the hoop the size it was tonight and the rhythm I was feeling, it just felt like I had to throw that one up."

Sony Is "Waiting For The Right Time" To Show The Last Guardian

Sony Is "Waiting For The Right Time" To Show The Last GuardianThe Last Guardian should be out by now. It's not. It could have been shown off at the PS4 unveiling. It wasn't. Fans looking forward to the game have every right to wonder what the hell is going on, then, and to them, Sony Worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida would like to say he's sorry.

In an interview with Kotaku at the PS4 reveal in New York, Yoshida said "I apologize to people who are waiting for the game. Ueda-san posted that he's still working on it, that he's creative-directing it and that the team in the Japan studios are working hard. We are waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian."

Asked about whether the game might now be for the PlayStation 4, and not the PlayStation 3 as originally intended, Yoshida would only say "We're going to talk about it when we can."

Given there's so much more to find out about the PS4, you could hope that time would be E3. If, that is, you've got any hope left in the tank for this game.

'Ip Man: The Final Flight' to open Hong Kong fest

HONG KONG (AP) ? "Ip Man: The Final Fight," about the latter years of the Wing Chun master Ip Man, will open the Hong Kong International Film Festival next month.

The martial arts master has been portrayed many times on the big screen, most recently by Tony Leung in Wong Kar Wai's "The Grandmaster."

Anthony Wong, the new film's leading man, said comparing the roles was hard because he plays a different time in Ip Man's life. He plays Ip Man from his arrival in Hong Kong in 1949 until his death.

"There are photos of Ip during this time of his life, there is a video of him practicing with wooden sticks for me to portray," Wong said at a news conference Thursday to announce the festival's lineup. "However, how he talked, how he behaved, no one really knows. That left a lot for the imagination, but in comparison, there are references for the Ip Man that I portray."

The festival starts March 17.

Last Wednesday, the SCSU Heart Health Fair called ?The Heart Truth? was held in room 201 of the Michael J. Adanti Student Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The SCSU Health & Wellness Center, the Multicultural Center, the Women?s Center, Men?s Initiative, Human Resources, Chartwell?s and the Drug and Alcohol Resource Center jointly sponsored the event.

The event was held to celebrate American Heart Health Month and the Southern community was invited to stop by and learn more about the prevalence of the various cardiovascular diseases and ways to prevent these conditions.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease or cardiovascular disease is the term used for several conditions that are related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, and as the plaque builds up and the arteries narrow, this creates a greater risk for a heart attack or a stroke.

The Wellness Center was offering numerous screenings to those in attendance. These screenings included cholesterol, blood pressure, Body Mass Index and body composition. The American Heart Association recommends all people start getting cholesterol screenings at the age of 20, and for people to regularly get their blood pressure checked from an early age. High blood pressure can be hereditary and drinking alcohol, smoking and a poor diet with a high salt intake can exasperate it.

The Heart Health Fair offered a wide range of healthy snacks for those in attendance. The groups offered cucumber water for everyone to drink and the snacks consisted of a selection of fruits and vegetables. In addition, there was a yogurt bar with healthy options for people to put in their yogurt, including chopped fruits and granola.

Jessica Mayne, who was staffing the snack table and was informing those in

attendance about healthy recipes being offered on the table, said that portion control is something that everyone should take into account when eating, so the serving cups at the event were there to educate people on what is a healthy serving.

?We have these smaller cups,? Mayne said, ?to show portion control, not just because these are samples.?

The Drug and Alcohol Resource Center had a table set up detailing the various effects that alcohol, smoking and drugs have on the human body, especially the heart. The American Heart Association states that consumption of copious amounts of alcohol can raise the level of fats in the blood.

In addition, too much alcohol can lead to a high calorie intake due to the ?munchies,? as well as high blood pressure and heart failure. Binge drinking can cause a stroke, and in some cases cardiac arrhythmia, and even sudden cardiac death. The Drug and Alcohol Resource Center suggested that people drink less frequently because the more regularly someone drinks, the greater the tolerance.

Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States according to the American Heart Association. Smoking raises people?s blood pressure as well as increasing the blood to clot, leading to heart disease. The Drug and Alcohol Resource Center also had information on what dangerous influences drugs such as cocaine have on the heart. A game, pin the heart on cupid while wearing ?beer goggles,? goggles designed to imitate the drunken perspective was also being presented at the Drug and Alcohol Resource Center table.

The SCSU Fitness Center was at the fair offering information on weight management and heart health. Allison Blacker from the Fitness Center said exercise is extremely important on the health of the heart.

?Exercise lowers your risk for heart disease and other cardiovascular health issues,? Blacker said.

The Fitness Center is offering a hands-only CPR lesson on Thursday, Feb. 28th at 6:30 p.m. in the Farnham programming space, Blacker said.

?It will instruct students on hands only CPR,? she said. ?And teach them that you can still perform life saving CPR without mouth to mouth contact.?

Tavares OKs nearly $3 million loan to cover cost overruns for wedding pavilion over Lake Dora

TAVARES ? The city's latest project to improve its waterfront, a Pavilion on the Lake for weddings and conventions, will cost nearly twice as much as planned, but city officials unanimously approved a loan Wednesday to cover the $3 million in cost overruns.

Council members agreed the pavilion will be the city's latest entrepreneurial success despite the revised $6.3 million cost. Tavares, population 14,000, has enjoyed a downtown renaissance with establishment of a seaplane base and branding itself as "America's Seaplane City."

"Some had said the seaplane base was a boondoggle, but it has been successful," Mayor Bob Wolfe said. "We take a gamble here and there, but I don't think this will be much of a gamble."

The pavilion will be a two-story, 8,000-square-foot building at the end of a 150-foot pier over Lake Dora that replicates a historic pavilion built in 1913 that was torn down in the 1960s. The building will feature two banquet halls, a catering kitchen and meeting rooms for rental.

Construction had been originally tallied at $3.4 million, but the pilings cost more than estimated because current regulations require concrete, rather than wood pilings, and the contractor discovered that the bedrock under parts of the lake were much deeper than anticipated.

Also, city officials upgraded the design, with a more high-tech window-glazing system, a geothermal heating and air-conditioning system and two elevators instead of one.

The city will take out a $2.7 million loan to cover most of the additional costs. City Administrator John Drury was optimistic the facility could make enough revenues to repay the debt and be self-sufficient.

Resident Jerome Wosika was skeptical. He questioned why the city didn't anticipate some of the costs, such as the requirement for concrete pilings.

"We should not be in the hospitality business, in competition with other facilities and businesses," he said. "The city should only be in the 'running a city' business."

Little audience for 'Zero Dark Thirty' in Pakistan

In this photo taken on Feb. 15, 2013, Pakistani children play at the demolished compound of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Pakistan stars in "Zero Dark Thirty," from early scenes at a detention site to the dramatic closing minutes as Navy SEALs assault the hideout of bin Laden. ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan stars in "Zero Dark Thirty," from early scenes at a detention site to the dramatic closing minutes as Navy SEALs assault the hideout of Osama bin Laden. But the Academy Award-nominated film about the hunt for the al-Qaida leader has sparked a controversy here about its portrayal of the country, and it will likely not be shown on the local big screen anytime soon.

Partly, the film taps into national discomfort that bin Laden was found to be living for years near Pakistan's equivalent of West Point, and anger over the U.S. decision to enter its airspace and raid the compound without giving advance notice. Doubts about whether bin Laden was really hiding out for years in the city of Abbottabad are also common across Pakistan, a country where conspiracy theories often have more weight than fact.

But Pakistanis who have seen the film on DVD or Internet downloads are also making much of what they say are factual errors.

Nadeem F. Paracha, a columnist for the English language newspaper Dawn and a cultural critic in Pakistan, noted that in some scenes characters speak Arabic, whereas Pakistanis in fact speak Urdu or Pashto or one of the tens of other languages found here.

In other scenes protesters get right up to the U.S. Embassy gates when in reality the embassy is situated in an enclosed diplomatic enclave that demonstrators can't access. Some scenes that were supposed to show the frontier city of Peshawar looked more like 19th century Delhi in India.

"How can you make a Hollywood blockbuster, put in so much money and get simple things wrong?" Paracha asked. "Instead of the film being taken seriously, it became a joke among Pakistanis."

The movie traces the arc of the CIA's decade-long hunt for bin Laden through the eyes of a young female analyst, who spends most of her time ostensibly in Pakistan. Screenwriter Mark Boal visited Pakistan to do research, but the movie scenes were not shot here.

One scene that also raises questions shows a vaccination worker going to the compound door as part of the American plan to get DNA samples from the bin Laden family. The U.S. did in fact run a fake hepatitis campaign, but in the movie it's portrayed as an attempt to vaccinate against polio. This could add suspicion to polio workers already facing attacks by militants in the tribal agencies.

Pakistan has only a few movie theaters that show English-language films, and none so far has aired "Zero Dark Thirty." All films shown at cinemas must be approved by a board of censors, and the head of the censor board, Dr. Raja Mustafa Hyder, said no distributor has applied for permission to show the film.

Whether or not it would actually make it past the censor board is another question, considering that a representative of the powerful Pakistani military sits on the board.

After it came out that bin Laden had been living in Abbottabad and that the military failed to detect the American raiding party coming to get him, the once-revered Pakistan army found itself on the defensive. The film also highlights the cooperation between the C.I.A. and Pakistan's intelligence agency during the early years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the United States, a potentially embarrassing topic in a country with such vehement anti-American sentiment.

Jamshed Zafar, one of the leading importers and distributors of foreign films in Pakistan, said he decided after discussions with friends that it wasn't worth importing "Zero Dark Thirty."

"If you get into such controversy, you not only lose money but your reputation is also at stake," he said.

Any distributor or movie house that showed the movie might also be courting trouble with the public. Last year during demonstrations against an anti-Islam film crowds of right-wing Islamic hardliners burned some movie houses.

The fact that neighboring India ? Pakistan's archenemy ? substituted for many of the Pakistani street scenes has also raised concerns, said Rashid Khawaja, a Lahore-based film producer and distributor.

Until recently it was possible to purchase a DVD of the film in Islamabad. But at least two stores in the capital said in recent days that they stopped selling it because of rumors it had been banned. Another store was still selling the movie ? albeit under the counter.

In Abbottabad, the DVD is available at local video stores but hasn't sold particularly well.

"This movie is about Osama and Abbottabad, and still I honestly say people living here are not showing much interest in it," said Akhtar Hussain.

Even in the city where people could hear the Navy SEALs as they swooped in on helicopters and flew away with bin Laden's body, there's still disbelief he was living so close.

College student Raheel Ahmed said he watched "Zero Dark Thirty" and came away thinking the movie's intent was to praise President Barack Obama.

"I don't know whether Osama was here," he said, "but Americans have defamed us by producing the movie."

Company Mergers Could Solve Branding - Business Insider

News outlets are reporting today that OfficeMax and Office Depot are apparently considering a merger.

The move makes sense for many reasons. The combination will result in significant cost reductions. The new entity will have a stronger negotiating position with suppliers. And competition in the brutal office-products industry will decrease at least a bit.

The biggest benefit, I suspect, will be branding.

OfficeMax and Office Depot have long had a simple problem. The names are so similar that people get them confused. The stores are similar, too. I suspect many people visit OfficeMax and walk out thinking they just went to Office Depot, and vice-versa. One of the stores is very near my house. I visit it?often but I have?no idea which one it is.

This is a major problem for the companies. Differentiation is critical; you have to be unique to justify premium pricing. But how do you differentiate a brand when consumers constantly confuse you with your competitor?

The beauty of the merger is that it ends the confusion. One brand will emerge when the dust settles.

This is really the only way the branding situation could end happily. In theory, one of the companies could have moved to a different brand but this wasn?t likely to happen; the company that made the change would have incurred significant costs while the company that didn?t change enjoyed significant benefits. A merger, though, is a solution that benefits both companies.

Over the next few days analysts will calculate all the cost savings that will come from this merger. The biggest benefit, however, is the resolution of a difficult branding problem.
