Mayor announces ?1bn to transform Royal Albert Dock into capital's next business district

? ABP to create state of the art business port aimed initially at Chinese and Asian business
? Estimated 20,000 jobs to be created
? Development to be worth ?6bn to the UK economy when complete

The Mayor, Boris Johnson, has announced details of a ?1bn deal to transform London?s historic docklands into the capital?s next business district, forging new trade links with China and other economies in the Asia-Pacific region and securing billions of pounds of inward investment in the UK economy.

Owned by the Greater London Authority and situated in the heart of Royal Docks Enterprise Zone, the 35-acre site at Royal Albert Dock is set to be transformed by ABP China (Holding), a successful commercial developer, into a gateway for Asian and Chinese business seeking to establish headquarters in Europe as well as other businesses wanting to set up in the capital.

Historically the trading heartland of the capital, the deal will re-instate the Royal Docks as a commercial and trading centre for the 21st century, delivering around 20,000 full-time jobs and boosting local employment in Newham by 30 per cent. When complete the site will become London?s third business district and, according to initial projections, be worth ?6bn to the UK economy, generating ?23m in business rates annually and acting as a catalyst for further development in the area.

The largest development of its kind in the UK, the state-of-the-art business district will act as a platform for financial, high-tech and knowledge driven industries looking establish and drive forward their business in UK and European markets. The deal represents one of the first direct investment by a Chinese developer in London?s property market and will eventually be home to over 3.2 million square feet of high quality work, retail and leisure space, including 2.5 million square feet of prime office space, creating a new, vibrant 24/7 district on London?s waterways.

An experienced developer in China, this is ABP?s first development project in Europe. With a track record of investing in and transforming large areas in need of regeneration, the company specialises in delivering projects of significant scale. ABP have recently completed a large development of around 15 million square feet in Beijing, while their Shenyang project in north-eastern China is even larger, with plans for 75 million square feet when complete.

Working with UK developer Stanhope and architects and masterplanners Farrells, ABP have a commitment to developing a minimum of 600,000 square feet in the first phase, with strong interest for office space already being shown by Chinese companies, including some of the country?s top banks. The first occupiers are due to move in in 2017.

The deal is a key part of the Mayor?s on-going commitment to regenerate London?s docklands, bringing jobs and homes back to the capital?s waterways and builds on the momentum of the development of the Olympic Park and Stratford City. It is the latest in a string of investments in the area including the Siemens Crystal Centre, the Emirates cable car, and new homes at Great Eastern Quay, as well as upcoming developments at Silvertown Quays and the plans to create the UK?s largest floating village at Royal Victoria Dock.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: ?For centuries the waterways of east London were the throbbing arteries of UK trade and commerce. This deal symbolises the revival of that great era, continuing the re-invention of this once maligned part of the capital into a 21st century centre of trade and investment. Creating a third financial district in the capital, this development will act as a beacon for eastern investors looking west, bringing with it tens of thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment for the UK economy.?

Chairman of ABP, Mr Xu, said: ?I am very pleased and very proud that my company ABP has reached this agreement for the Royal Albert Dock with the Greater London Authority. This project will be hugely significant for both the Chinese and UK economies. My vision is to develop a world class international business district which will initially target Asian businesses to help them secure a destination in London, which in China is seen as the gateway to both the United Kingdom and the wider European economy. Our plans aim to strengthen trade between east and west, provide new local jobs and deliver benefits for the wider London and UK economy.?

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: ?Enterprise Zones are creating new local jobs and stimulating business ventures through significant tax incentives, simplified planning and super fast broadband that will support our economy.

?This is a significant investment deal for London and will boost employment and growth in the capital. I am delighted that the benefits of Enterprise Zone status are attracting foreign investment to the country and strengthening our trade relations with major international players like China."

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham said: ?The Royal Docks Enterprise Zone offers an unrivalled investment opportunity and this deal further strengthens Newham?s growing reputation as an ideal destination for international business.

?We welcome ABP?s ambitious vision for the Docks which are already home to London City Airport, the University of East London, the Siemens Crystal and the Excel. ABP?s proposals will bring further investment from abroad and unlock future development. It will also create benefits for local people by providing thousands of new jobs and further enhancing the waterfront for people to enjoy.

?Newham will work closely with ABP and their UK development partner, Stanhope, to ensure that as many of these jobs as possible are accessible to local residents. Our successful Workplace jobs brokerage scheme is ideally placed to ensure this happens.?

Situated in the Royal Docks Enterprise Zone, the Albert Dock site, when complete, will have some of the best transport links in the capital, with direct access to central and western London via the new Crossrail station coming in 2018. It also benefits from close proximity to the University of East London and City Airport, providing direct links to Europe?s key business destinations.

(AP) ? Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been a public face of gun control for years, but he's in a new, unsought spotlight after ricin-laced letters were sent to him and a group he helps lead.

The billionaire hasn't shied from using his political post and his personal fortune to push for gun control well beyond the city limits, garnering both plaudits and complaints that he's overreaching.

The poisoned letters to Bloomberg and the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns essentially threatened that "anyone who comes for my guns will be shot in the face," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Thursday, shortly before the Secret Service disclosed that a similar missive was sent to President Barack Obama.

Bloomberg didn't comment on the case Thursday, but he said Wednesday he didn't feel angry, threatened ? or inclined to back down.

"We're not going to walk away from those efforts," he said.

Fellow gun-control advocates deplored the letters, which arrived after Bloomberg played a prominent role in a now-stalled push for new firearms laws in response to the December school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

"The work Mayor Bloomberg does is vitally important to our cause, and our thoughts are with them this week," Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said in a statement Thursday. He emphasized that the organization doesn't think the letter episode reflects the mass of Americans engaged in the issue.

Thanks to his office and pocketbook, Bloomberg has become a uniquely influential figure in the gun debate.

Vice President Joe Biden said in March that "there has been no support that has been more consequential" than Bloomberg's in the recent, White House-fueled press for new gun restrictions. And the National Rifle Association has made clear it sees Bloomberg as a leading foe, caricaturing him as an octopus on the cover of its magazine in 2007 and branding him an "evangelist for the nanny state."

Representatives for the NRA and another gun-rights advocacy group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, didn't immediately respond to inquiries Thursday about Bloomberg.

As leader of the nation's biggest city, Bloomberg often emphasizes that he feels mayors are on the front lines of a fight against gun violence ? and that killings and shootings have dropped to historic lows in New York during his nearly 12-year tenure. And he has pursued the fight elsewhere.

His administration has set up gun-buying stings in other states to highlight what it said were illegal sales, on the premise that many illicit guns in New York were bought elsewhere. The city has sued dozens of out-of-state gun dealers, resulting in court-appointed monitoring for many. One South Carolina dealer also ended up pleading guilty to a federal weapons charge.

Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which now includes more than 900 mayors. Financed partly by Bloomberg , the nonprofit group has spread its message through such means as a Super Bowl ad this year and another, $12 million ad campaign less than two months later.

The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-unaffiliated Bloomberg also has spent millions of dollars advancing his gun-control views through political contributions. In one example, his super PAC, Independence USA, spent more than $2 million on ads in the Democratic primary in a special congressional election in Chicago this year.

Bloomberg's favored candidate, then-Illinois state Rep. Robin Kelly, got the seat. And Bloomberg got some criticism that he was butting in where he didn't belong.

"You had someone from outside of the community determining what the issue was for Chicago and that district," Delmarie Cobb, a Democratic political consultant who worked with one of the other candidates, recalled Thursday. Her candidate, Alderman Anthony Beale, called for tougher gun laws himself during the campaign, but he also sought to focus on job growth and other topics.

Bloomberg said at the time he was just a concerned citizen who happens "to have some money, and that's what I'm going to do with my money ? try to get us some sensible gun laws."

It wasn't the first time he'd been branded a gun-control interloper. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne complained in 2011 that Bloomberg had overstepped his power in authorizing investigators to run a sting at a Phoenix gun show. Bloomberg's representatives noted that Arizona-based private investigators carried out the undercover operation.

Now, government investigators are working to figure out who sent the letters to Bloomberg and Obama.

The two directed at Bloomberg were postmarked from Shreveport, La., according to the postal workers' union, which cited information from a Postal Service briefing. The Shreveport postal center handles mail from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Julie Lewis noted.

The White House and Bloomberg letters were intercepted at mail facilities before reaching the president or mayor. The third was opened by the mayors' group director, Mark Glaze.

Three New York police officers who examined the letter to Bloomberg experienced minor symptoms that have since abated, authorities said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ricin is found naturally in castor beans. Exposure can cause difficulty breathing, vomiting and redness on the skin.

The letters were the latest in a string of toxin-laced missives, but authorities would not say whether the letters to Bloomberg and Obama were believed to be linked to any other recent case.

In Washington state, a 37-year-old was charged last week with threatening to kill a federal judge in a letter that contained ricin.

About a month earlier, letters containing the substance were addressed to Obama, a U.S. senator and a Mississippi judge. One of the letters was traced back to Tupelo, Miss., and a Mississippi man was arrested.

Early Brain Response To Words Predictive For Autism

I certainly hope the DSM won't be forsaken, because if it is, then no one will have a definitive way to diagnose autism or anything else psychiatric. Using biological markers (i.e., fMRI, structural imaging studies [MRI, CT], etc.) was the original hope for DSM-5 around the time that DSM-IV-TR was completed (2000), but when the time to write DSM-5 came around, there wasn't enough data to define any such markers with any remote degree of validity.

Trust me, most of us (at least those that take insurance) do

EDMONTON, Alberta ? WWE Main Event was full of pulse-pounding WWE action including Sheamus battling Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel going toe-to-toe with Antonio Cesaro and R-Truth joining forces with Tons of Funk to face 3MB. Also, a brand new commentary team of The Miz, Josh Matthews and Ricardo Rodriguez debuted!

Sheamus def. Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett (Non-Title Match)

Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett and The Celtic Warrior are no strangers inside the squared circle. They have faced off previously in battles that have degraded into all-out brawls. Also, still visibly upset over his loss to Fandango on Raw following The Miz?s interference as special guest referee, Barrett engaged in a heated exchange with The Awesome One before the contest, only to ramp up tensions.

WWE MAIN EVENT PHOTOS?| WATCH SHEAMUS AND BARRETT BRAWL

The familiarity between Sheamus and Barrett was clearly evident early in the contest as momentum swings remained even. Although The Celtic Warrior tried to rely on his strength to keep The Barrett Barrage at bay, The Bareknuckle Brawler?s resilience was enough to balance out Sheamus? offense.

The physicality of the contest reached a fever pitch when Barrett knocked his opponent out of the ring causing Sheamus to apparently injure his elbow. Alas, The Fighting Irishman remained in the fight even as Barrett targeted the elbow.

Just as the WWE Universe had hoped, the match turned into an all-out brawl with neither Superstar maintaining an edge for very long. It became impossible to predict who would have his hand raised in victory. Barrett and Sheamus pulled out all the stops, but it was ultimately a Brogue Kick out of nowhere that secured a hard-fought victory for The Celtic Warrior.

Following the contest, the Intercontinental Champion had some harsh words for the Canadian crowd, claiming he was so tough he could beat them all. Barrett then directed his attention to his nemesis, The Miz. Challenging The Awesome One ended up making the British grappler?s night even worse as he was silenced with a Skull-Crushing Finale.

Are children who take Ritalin for ADHD at greater risk of future drug abuse?

May 29, 2013 ? UCLA research has shown that that children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are far more likely than other kids to develop serious substance abuse problems as adolescents and adults. But do stimulant medications used to treat ADHD contribute to the risk?

UCLA psychologists have conducted the most comprehensive assessment ever on this question and have found that children with ADHD who take medications such as Ritalin and Adderall are at no greater risk of using alcohol, marijuana, nicotine or cocaine later in life than kids with ADHD who don't take these medications.

The psychologists analyzed 15 long-term studies, including data from three studies not yet published. These studies followed more than 2,500 children with ADHD from childhood into adolescence and young adulthood.

"We found the children were neither more likely nor less likely to develop alcohol and substance-use disorders as a result of being treated with stimulant medication," said Kathryn Humphreys, a doctoral candidate in UCLA's Department of Psychology and lead author of the study. "We found no association between the use of medication such as Ritalin and future abuse of alcohol, nicotine, marijuana and cocaine."

The children assessed in the studies, who had a mean age of 8 years old when the studies began and 20 at the most recent follow-up assessment, come from a broad geographical range, including California, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Germany and Canada. The research is published in the May 29 issue of the journal JAMA Psychiatry, a psychiatry research journal published by the American Medical Association.

What does this study mean for parents of children with ADHD?

"For any particular child, parents should consult with the prescribing physician about potential side effects and long-term risks," said Steve S. Lee, a UCLA associate professor of psychology and senior author of the study. "Saying that all parents need not be concerned about the use of stimulant medication for their children is an overstatement; parents should have the conversation with the physician. As with other medications, there are potential side effects, and the patient should be carefully evaluated to, for example, determine the proper dosage."

"For parents whose major concern about Ritalin and Adderall is about the future risk for substance abuse, this study may be helpful to them," Humphreys said. "We found that on average, their child is at no more or less at risk for later substance dependence. This does not apply to every child but does apply on average. However, later substance use is usually not the only factor parents think about when they are choosing treatment for their child's ADHD."

Ritalin is associated with certain side effects, such as suppressing appetite, disrupting sleep and changes in weight, Lee said.

Lee, Humphreys and their colleagues reported in 2011 that children with ADHD are two to three times more likely than children without the disorder to develop serious substance-abuse problems in adolescence and adulthood, including the use of nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs. This new study does not challenge that finding but finds that, on average, children who take stimulant medication for ADHD are not at additional risk for future substance abuse.

"The majority of children with ADHD -- at least two-thirds -- show significant problems academically, in social relationships, and with anxiety and depression when you follow them into adolescence," Lee said.

As the individuals in the studies get older, researchers will be able to study the rate at which they graduate from college, get married, have children and/or get divorced and to assess how well they function, Humphreys said.

ADHD occurs in approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of children in the U.S., and figures in many other industrialized countries with compulsory education are comparable, according to Lee. ADHD is about three to three-and-a-half more prevalent in boys than girls, he said.

Symptoms of the disorder include being easily distracted, fidgeting, being unable to complete a single task and being easily bored. However, to receive a diagnosis of ADHD by a child psychologist or psychiatrist, a child must have at least six of nine symptoms of either hyperactivity or inattention, the child's behavior must be causing problems in his or her life, and the symptoms must not be explainable by any medical condition or any other mental disorder.

Children can be hyperactive, distracted and inattentive for a variety of reasons, Lee said, not only because of ADHD but also because some of them are abused, malnourished, depressed or have impaired vision, Lee said.

Many more children meet the criteria for ADHD than are being treated for it, and many children may benefit from treatment who are not receiving it, Lee and Humphreys said.

Lee's laboratory is conducting a study of 230 children, both with and without ADHD, who were 6 to 9 years old at the beginning of the research and are now 10 to 13, to identify predictors of early and problematic alcohol use. That research is federally funded by the National Institutes of Health.

As children with ADHD enter adolescence and adulthood, they typically fall into three groups of roughly equal size, Lee said: one-third will have significant problems in school and socially; one-third will have moderate impairment; and one-third will exhibit only mild impairment.

Marshall Lytle dies, leaves 'Rock Around the Clock' legacy

Marshall Lytle dies: The original bass player for Bill Haley & His Comets, Marshall Lytle was known as the father of rock bass. Lytle's hits included 'Rock Around the Clock' and 'Shake, Rattle, and Roll.'

By Staff,?Associated Press / May 29, 2013

Marshall Lytle, the original bass player for Bill Haley & His Comets, one of the first bands to take rock 'n' roll music mainstream, has died. He was 79.

Lytle died at his home in New Port Richey, Fla., on May 25, said his niece, Shayna Golda.

Lytle recorded hits like "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" with Haley in the 1950s. He was known for his percussive bass style, slapping the strings as he played, and his lively performances. He would sometimes take the bass over his head or ride it like a surfboard.

"He's known as the father of rock bass by some people," said Michael Jordan Rush, who published a memoir by Lytle titled "Still Rockin' Around the Clock" in 2011. "He certainly influenced rock bass more than any other individual."

Lytle was born in Old Fort, N.C., in September 1933. A birth defect made it nearly impossible for him to walk as a child. His older brother would carry him to and from school on his back. It was then that Lytle developed a love of music.

"He had been a musician from the time he was barely able to walk," Golda said.

While Lytle was still a young boy, he had surgery that gave him the use of his legs, she said. In 1951, Lytle, then still a teen, joined Bill Haley's Saddlemen. At the time, Haley had a radio show in Chester, Pa., and the manager commented that the group didn't look like saddlemen, Rush said.

He suggested they call themselves "The Comets" instead.

"Marshall said, 'That's a great name, I think we should go with it,'" Rush said.

Several of the band's hits are now iconic rock 'n' roll songs: "Rock Around the Clock," recorded in 1954, is one of the highest selling singles of all time. Lytle also played on hits like "See You Later, Alligator."

But he and two other members of the band quit in 1955 over a money dispute and formed a new group called The Jodimars. The group had limited commercial success, and Lytle temporarily changed his name and later went into real estate.

He returned to music in 1987, playing in a Comets reunion band, and performed right up until the weeks before his death, Rush said. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with other members of the Comets in 2012.

Golda said Lytle was diagnosed with lung cancer early this year. "And he didn't smoke," she said. "But performing all those years in nightclubs and bars and being on tour buses and all those things, you're exposed."

She recalled receiving postcards from around the world from her uncle as a child.

"He led a fulfilling, very interesting, very joyful life," she said.

Lytle is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Cathy Smith, two siblings and seven children.

Rep. Bachmann says she won't run for re-election

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Michele Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman whose sharply conservative views on social and fiscal issues elevated her to a leader of the tea party movement, announced Wednesday she will not seek a fifth term but insisted the decision was unrelated to ethics inquiries or her near-loss last fall.

It was a sudden turn for the foster-mom-turned-politician. She left the door open to other, unspecified political options.

Bachmann was traveling in Russia as part of a congressional delegation and was not available for interviews. In a lengthy video message to supporters, she said her decision "was not influenced by any concerns about my being re-elected."

Ron Carey, a former chief of staff to Bachmann, said he suspects she was anticipating a tough battle ahead and seemed to be stuck in place in Congress.

"This is a great chance to exit stage right rather than have a knockdown, drag-out re-election fight," said Carey, also a former state GOP chairman. "The reality also set in that she is not a favorite of Republican leadership, so she is not going to be rising up to a committee chair or rising up in leadership."

Her departure next year is part of a larger shift involving the leading personalities of the tea party. Stalwarts like former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Rep. Allen West of Florida and former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint have left elected office to move into conservative organizations and commentary roles.

They've been replaced by a new round of tea party-backed lawmakers such as Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah and Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho.

"The movement had moved past her to a new round of leaders in Congress and the states around the country," said Dick Wadhams, a Colorado-based Republican strategist. "In a short period of time, a new generation has stepped forward since the last election."

Bachmann also said her decision "was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign" last year. In January, a former Bachmann aide filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, claiming the candidate made improper payments to an Iowa state senator who was the state chairman of her 2012 presidential run. The aide, Peter Waldron, also accused Bachmann of other FEC violations.

Bachmann had given few clues she was considering leaving Congress. Her fundraising operation was churning out regular pitches for the small-dollar donations that she collected so well over the years. She also had an ad running on Twin Cities television promoting her role in opposing President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. The early timing of the ad suggested she was preparing for a tough fight against Democrat Jim Graves, a hotel chain owner who narrowly lost to Bachmann in November.

Without the polarizing Bachmann on the ticket, Republicans could have an easier time holding a district that leans more heavily in the GOP direction than any other in Minnesota. A parade of hopefuls was expected.

By Wednesday morning, state Rep. Matt Dean, a former House majority leader, said he was inclined to run.

"It is something I have thought about in the past if Michele were to not run again," Dean said. "It's not something that I just started thinking about this morning."

Graves said he thought Bachmann had "read the tea leaves."

"The district is changing," the Democrat said in an interview Wednesday with Minneapolis television station KARE. "They want somebody who really does have some business background and understands the economy and can get things done in Washington and back in the district."

Andy Aplikowski, who has long been active in the district's Republican Party chapter, said he expected Bachmann to run again but can understand why she didn't.

"It's a grueling thing to be in Congress. It's a grueling thing to be Michele Bachmann in Congress," he said. "Every move you make is criticized and put under a microscope."

Bachmann's strongly conservative views propelled her into politics, and once there, she never backed down.

She was a suburban mother of five in 1999 when she ran for a Minnesota school board seat because she thought state standards were designed to teach students values and beliefs.

She lost that race, but won a state Senate seat a year later. Once in St. Paul, she seized on gay marriage as an issue and led a charge to legally define marriage in Minnesota as between one man and one woman. That failed, but Bachmann had laid the foundation with social conservatives to help propel her into Congress in 2006.

In Washington, she turned to fiscal issues, attacking Democrats and President Barack Obama for government bailouts and the health care overhaul. Even in her early years in Congress, Bachmann frequently took those views to right-leaning cable talk programs, cultivating her national image as she built a formidable fundraising base with like-minded viewers outside Minnesota.

But her penchant for provocative rhetoric sometimes backfired. She was hammered in 2008 for saying Obama might have "anti-American views," a statement that prompted a rare retreat by Bachmann and made her race that year closer than it would have been. She was also criticized by her fellow Republicans last July for making unsubstantiated allegations that an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had family ties to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Her White House bid got off to a promising start, with a win in an Iowa GOP test vote. But Bachmann quickly faded and finished last when the real voting started in Iowa's leadoff caucuses, a result that caused her to drop out. Saddled with debt, she opted to campaign again for her Minnesota seat and squeaked through.

But the failed presidential campaign continued to dog her. Allegations of improper payments prompted ethics inquiries. Bachmann also faced a lawsuit from a former aide that alleged someone on the congresswoman's team stole a private email list of home-school supporters for use in the campaign. That case is pending.

On Wednesday, Bachmann promised supporters she would "continue to work overtime for the next 18 months in Congress defending the same Constitutional Conservative values we have worked so hard on together."

As for her plans beyond Congress, she said, "There is no future option or opportunity, be it directly in the political arena or otherwise, that I won't be giving serious consideration if it can help save and protect our great nation."

Bachmann's success in the talk media world led industry analysts to say she could easily move into a gig as a host. She has been mentioned as a potential challenger to first-term Democratic Sen. Al Franken but has given little indication that she would take that step.

Obama picks Furman as chief economist, Krueger steps down: source

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to appoint longtime adviser Jason Furman to be his new chief White House economist, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Furman, who will replace economist Alan Krueger as chair of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has advised Obama since his 2008 election campaign.

Furman has been instrumental in formulating administration policies on taxes, the response to the U.S. recession, and efforts to avoid a "fiscal cliff" at the end of last year.

Krueger, who was confirmed as CEA chair in November 2011, is returning to his professor post at Princeton University, from which he has been on leave, the White House confirmed.

"Alan was the driving force behind many of the economic policies that I have proposed that will grow our economy and create middle-class jobs," Obama said in a statement.

"And while we have more work to do, today our economy is improving - thanks, in no small part, to Alan's efforts," he said.

Krueger had to return to the school by this fall in order to maintain his tenure, according to one source.

A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on Furman.

Furman is currently assistant to the president for economic policy and principal deputy director of the White House National Economic Council (NEC), which is run by Gene Sperling, and was an economist in the Clinton administration.

When former NEC head Larry Summers left the administration at the end of 2010, Furman was considered a possible replacement, but the post went to Sperling instead.

"He's as bright and able as any economist I've worked with," Summers said of Furman in an interview. "I think he'll be terrific."

The CEA advises the president on domestic and international economic policy based on data and economic research. The chairman is a cabinet member and requires Senate confirmation.

Former colleagues said Furman would be effective because of his good relationship with the president and White House staff.

"Jason has got analytical chops plus extensive economic experience. The president listens to him," said Austan Goolsbee, a University of Chicago professor and former CEA chair under Obama.

"It's hard to find someone with his combination of policy experience and pragmatism along with serious economic and analytic rigor," said Jason Bordoff, a professor at Columbia University and a former White House adviser on energy issues.

"He's strategic. He understands how the White House policy process works, all of which will allow the CEA to be incredibly relevant," he said.

The appointment is likely a sign that budget and tax fights with Congress will continue to play a high profile role in White House economic policy. It could also raise the profile of the CEA within the White House itself.

Flaherty commits to Finance amid shuffle rumours | iPolitics

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is taking pre-emptive action to squelch any speculation he may be preparing to depart in the next cabinet shuffle.

The minister?s chief spokesman, Dan Miles, says there is no question Flaherty is committed to staying until the budget is balanced in 2015.

Miles says he had lunch with his boss on Saturday and was told in no uncertain terms that Flaherty wants to continue as finance minister if Prime Minister Stephen Harper wishes him to continue.

Flaherty has made the commitment numerous times in the past, but rumours persist in part because of his longevity in the position and because of ill health.

The minister has a serious skin disorder than has required him to take steroids, which have in turn caused swelling of his neck and face.

Logitech Harmony Ultimate

By Will Greenwald

Last year, Logitech's Harmony Touch universal remote control impressed us with a simple, elegant design, an easy setup process, and enough power to automate nearly any home theater activity with the press of its 2.4-inch color touch screen. Now, Logitech has one-upped itself with the Harmony Ultimate, a universal remote control system that takes all of the great parts of the Harmony Touch and adds even more power and features. At $349.99 (direct) it's pricier than the Harmony Touch and can be hard to justify if you don't have a very complicated home theater system, but its functionality and design still earn it our Editors' Choice and distinguish it as one of the best remote controls available.

Design
The Harmony Ultimate remote itself looks and feels almost identical to the Harmony Touch. It's still a conventionally shaped remote control centered around a large 2.4-inch touch screen flanked by large, simple buttons for playback, navigation, and volume/channel control. The controller has a matte, textured underside that feels both sturdy and secure in the hand, and its slim, curved profile is much more comfortable than many chunkier, rectangular remotes. It has a micro USB port hidden behind a rubber door on the bottom, and two metal contacts let it charge in the included cradle (which doesn't make a USB connection; you need to plug a cable directly into the remote to update it). If this were it, the Harmony Ultimate would be making a poor argument for its $100 premium over the Harmony Touch.

However, the remote is only part of the system. It comes with the Logitech Harmony Hub, a separate box that works with the remote to handle infrared repeating and Bluetooth. The infrared repeating is a handy feature that lets you control your devices without any line of sight. Place the hub near your home theater components and run the two included infrared blasters to other components nearby, and the remote can trigger the hub to blast out commands to all devices even if they're in a cabinet. The hub also adds Bluetooth functionality and support for the Harmony smartphone apps.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth support means the Harmony Ultimate controls not only your HDTV, Blu-ray player, and set-top box, but your game systems as well. A simple Bluetooth wizard guides you through pairing the remote with the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii U, the former of which previously required an adapter to work with Harmony remotes and the latter of which has no specific remote support. You can't play games on either system, but the Bluetooth commands let you navigate certain menus and control media playback. That's great if your game system is your primary media hub, but perhaps not so great if you consider the Harmony Ultimate retails for at least as much as the game system itself.

(AP) ? Academy award-winner Forest Whitaker turns in a solid performance as a cop searching for the murderer of a white teenager in the movie "Zulu," a violent and often shocking portrayal of South African gang culture where traces of apartheid still linger.

The film premiered at the close of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday and is directed by "Largo Winch'''s Jerome Salle, co-starring Orlando Bloom as a free-wheeling white officer, as well as South African actor Conrad Kemp.

As a child, Whitaker's character Ali narrowly escaped being murdered by Inkhata, a militant political party at war with Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid ANC. Now, as chief of Cape Town's homicide branch, his quest to bring the perpetrator to justice leads him on a path that uncovers the unhealed wounds of post-apartheid South Africa.

"Zulu'''s explcit, and, at times even gratuitous, depiction of violence and inter-human relations, paints a highly cynical picture of post-colonial Cape Town, one in which authorities are corrupt and vigilante justice is king.

Whitaker won the Oscar for his mesmerizing portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 2006's "The Last King of Scotland," and is known for adopting a method-acting approach to his roles. In preparation for "Zulu," he met with real-life Zulu gang members ? some just out of prison ? and went inside local communities to immerse himself in the character who suffers personal tragedies both in childhood and as an adult.

"I met the actual gang members from the different communities: the Zulu gang leaders, and the different members out of the prisons... I find that it helps to find the source of the character," the actor said.

"The violent crimes unit took me around quite a bit ... which helped me understand what it was like to be around the townships," he said, adding that he also learned Zulu and Afrikaans in the weeks up to filming.

Though the film's barbaric depiction of torture and murder has been panned by some critics as too showy ? severed heads, rapes and graphic mutilations ? Whitaker said the film is accurate in its portrayal of gangland violence.

"There were a number of "necklacings" in Khayelitsha, even while we were there," said Whitaker, referring to the shocking method of summary execution and torture carried out by forcing a rubber tire, filled with petrol, around a victim's chest and arms, and setting it on fire.

"There is that bubbling undercurrent exploding in different ways," he added, saying that while filming in South Africa he saw communities losing faith with local law enforcement and taking justice into their own hands. This mirrors very closely the denouement of the film, where Ali is gripped by thirst for revenge and bloody personal justice.

In preparation for the role, "I was dealing with officers, and people in the community were saying: "They're not listening to us. They're not helping us. They're allowing people to do these horrible things in our neighborhood. We have to take charge. We are the elders of this community, and we are not going to allow certain things to happen."

"And where does all that come from? Where is the pain that brings out these things? I think that's what's going to have to be addressed," he said.

Conrad Kemp, the film's only South African actor, said vigilante justice is widespread in the country, and linked to people thinking that regular justice is simply failing them.

For Whitaker, however, the real picture is not as bleak as the film might make out. He said slow, apartheid-related forgiveness is occurring.

It's related to the history of colonialization ? "those issues which have to do partly with forgiveness and being able to move forward," the actor said.

"It is slow ... (but) the continent is full of potentiality, it's growing, it's changing, it's moving."

Bombs in teen bedroom: How Columbine copycat plot was foiled (+video)

Bombs in teen bedroom were for a Columbine-style attack against an Oregon school, a prosecutor says. But the plot was foiled in the same way many such plots are uncovered.

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / May 26, 2013

A 17-year-old student in Albany, Ore., built several bombs and had a detailed plan ? including checklists and diagrams ? as part of a Columbine-style plot to attack West Albany High School, a local prosecutor says.

No motive has yet been made public, but Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson said authorities on Friday found six kinds of explosives ? including napalm bombs, pipe bombs, drain-cleaner bombs, and Molotov cocktails ? in "a secret compartment that had been created in the floorboards" of the teen's bedroom. The teen, Grant Acord, sought make his attack bigger than Columbine, Mr. Haroldson said.

The alleged plot is just the latest example of how the Columbine massacre continues shape school safety 14 years later.

Not only does the plot suggest that would-be attackers continue to draw inspiration from Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 12 students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., before committing suicide on April 20, 1999. But it also points to how such plots have been repeatedly foiled.

Authorities say they received a tip. Albany police became suspicious after they "received information that associated ... Acord with manufacturing a destructive device with the intent of detonating it at a school," Haroldson said, according to a CNN report.?

With students more alert for signs of potential attacks post-Columbine, tips have been crucial to preventing more Columbines.

  • In 2001, A suspicious note passed along by a friend led police in Elmira, N.Y., to find a high-school senior in the cafeteria with a pistol, 18 bombs, and a sawed-off shotgun, according to media reports.
  • Three years later, a tip about an Internet chat in which a student said he was planning to attack his school led to a stash of found stolen weapons, an AK-47, and Nazi literature in the student's house in Clinton Township, Mich., reports say.
  • Tips also led to the discovery of Columbine-style plots in Tampa, Fla., in 2011, and in Utah last year.

In the Utah case, the suspect actually went so far as to visit Columbine High School and interview the principal.

?To go as far as to interview the principal and physically go there ? sends a message that they were extremely committed to doing something,? Kenneth Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services in Cleveland told the Monitor at the time.

In Oregon, Grant will be charged as an adult with aggravated murder, Haroldson said. He will also face charges related to bombmaking.

?This was a very methodical process,? said Haroldson, according to a report in The Oregonian. ?He took time to even get to this point.?

The evidence gathered by police, which includes "diagrams, checklists, a plan to use explosive devices, and firearms to carry out a plan specifically modeled after the Columbine shootings" shows "intent and plans to carry out a deadly assault on a target-rich environment," he said.

Haroldson did not say when Grant planned to carry out the attack, according to ABC, but added: "I can't say enough about how lucky we are that there was an intervention. When I look at the evidence in the case, I shudder to think of what could have happened here."

Grant was arrested at his home Thursday.

Police say they have searched the school and found no devices, though a Reuters report said they are following up the initial search more thoroughly to make sure students can return to school after the Memorial Day vacation.

Russian choir of 4,335 performs in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? More than 4,000 Russian singers have performed outdoors in St. Petersburg with the aim of setting a world record for the largest choir.

The 4,335 singers of all ages and from nearly all of the city's professional and amateur choirs sang from the steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral before thousands of spectators under an intermittent rain.

The spectators, who closed their umbrellas with the start of Sunday's performance, sang along during the one-hour concert.

The 14 songs performed included some of the most popular and patriotic songs of Russia and the Soviet Union, including a hymn celebrating the country's victory in World War II.

Yulia Alshenina, whose daughter sang in the choir, said the concert was so moving she could not hold back her tears.

Sounds like java isn't finding a class called Main
There's a couple of reasons why that could happen. One is that that class just doesn't exist. Another is that it exists, but Java can't find it. If you list the directory you're in, and you see Main.class, please post the code for that class. If you don't see that class, that's probably why you're getting this error.

I'm using Netbeans IDE, and pretty much everything shows up and run correctly, but from cmd.. i don't get

That'll explain it. Netbeans is probably creating packages for your program - this is good practice, but when you're running from the command line, you have to call the class from the right place. A package is a directory - so if you see

    package net.kiparsky.foo

java will look for these class files under the directory ./net/kiparsky/foo

So if I try to run a file with that package declaration from the directory it's in:

/Users/jon/java/junk:514 $ ls Junk.class Junk.class [jon: Sat May 25 15:58] /Users/jon/java/junk:515 $ java Junk Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Junk (wrong name: net/kiparsky/foo/Junk) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(ClassLoader.java:631) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:615) at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:141) at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(URLClassLoader.java:283) at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$000(URLClassLoader.java:58) at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:197) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:190) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:306) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:247) [jon: Sat May 25 15:58] /Users/jon/java/junk:516 $

But if I put it in the right directories:

 /Users/jon/java/junk:521 $ mv Junk.class net/kiparsky/foo/ [jon: Sat May 25 16:00] /Users/jon/java/junk:522 $ java net/kiparsky/foo/Junk Hello, World! [jon: Sat May 25 16:00]

So what you want to do is look at the package declaration at the top of your source file, and cd up until you're one level outside of that hierarchy. If it's a one-level package:

 package foo;

Then you'll just cd up one level, then run foo/Main

    That should get you there.

So I decided to create a new project, with a one level package just like I have in my primary project, and I'm actually inside that one level dir, I type dir to see files, and it shows me HelloWorld.java and HelloWorld.class, than I type in java HelloWorld.. and it's showing me the same exception..??

So if you have this code:

package hello;  public class HelloWorld{   // nothing surprising here }

and you're actually in the directory hello, and you see the HelloWorld.class file, then you need to change directory and go one level up. Then you can run the class with

    >> java hello/HelloWorld
