Age is just a Number, Right until you Break a Hip! Scuba Diving and ...

aCouch Potato to Scuba Diver, My Story!

I learnt the sport when I was 26. Provided that I were to discover this sport today at a mature forty two years old, chances are I wouldn?t end up very far and additionally would quit after 1 or two efforts. Training paddleboarding was like scrapping with all the forces at the same time! We?re talking about struggling with balance on jerky surf on a slick wet deck, simultaneously controlling a paddle that?s supposed to counterweight. . . forggetabout it!

Trying to force this monstrosity in the best direction that you ought to go. In the process, I contributed blood and additionally skin from cuts on barnacles and bruises from hitting the surf board alongside my scalp, right before falling into water. Niiiice!

But generally there is a large difference with scuba diving. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO START SCUBA DIVING. I can?t say this enough. I trained scuba diving when I was 38. Today I?m definitely not recommending that 38 is considered to be a ripe old age but regardless, the body does feel slightly less sturdy and additionally less resilient, and definitely less flexible. Even more to that, even as we grow older, we consistently develop to have more fearfulnesses. Possibly we feel we have more so you can lose if something really went wrong to us.

I say middle age and beyond should never be a barrier in learning skin diving BUT we should really keep these things in mind:

1) an pronounced romance for the sea

2) an important motivation to know this amazing sport at the hands of somebody younger as compared to you

3) moderately good health and additionally more importantly, muscle strength

4) enough time and a mattress packed with money

Which is Which?

There?s a mind-blowing variety of snorkel fins in the marketplace. Selecting your first pair can be quite a challenging task. For you, almost all scuba diving fins are usually the same. This isn?t the fact though. Skilled scuba divers can let you know there exists numerous scuba diving fins. A type of fins will be appropriate for snorkeling, and another would be ideal for deep sea diving.

Since you gaze at the shelf of scuba diving fins, you?ll end up stunned to see all the bright colors inside the rainbow ? green, orange, yellow, pink, and also blue. The manly scuba diving fins are typically in their staid black color. Deciding on the color alone can be quite a difficult; although concentrating on the thing you actually need to your diving jaunts can certainly be harder.

If you are a amateur in diving, you will be more satisfied choosing slim finned scuba diving fins. This style of fins, include open toe pockets designed to incorporate force in your kick. Obviously, you probably must kick that hard up until you are ready for strong fins. Together with frequent practice, you in turn become comfortably experienced with the flow plus nuances of your fins.

Snorkeling or Diving Fins?

There isn?t any solid rule which will determines exclusivity of fins pertaining to snorkeling and also diving. The many patterns out there respond to the numerous requirements ? smaller fins regarding gliding under the sea and stiff fins intended for speed.

First, ask yourself what you need through your scuba diving fins. Do you require speed? Do you really need superior propulsion? Or perhaps do you want some thing for simple under the sea navigation? Those queries will definitely lead you while in the options of your scuba diving fins.

You will observe that scuba diving fins have got fins. These fins make it possible for one to swim quicker. Technologies have developed far better fins which remove the drag while you kick your fins to be able to propel yourself forward. The fins push up against the water upward or downward for the pull with out the tow.

Scuba divers opt for the open heel fins. These are generally donned along with boots, are stiffer and thus strong enough to battle the drag. The full foot fins are usually smaller sized and can?t provide the mandatory push if you want swifter forward motion. This kind is suggested pertaining to snorkeling. Along with this particular information and facts, you need not be confused about the fins you will want.

Battle for Speed

The next problem will probably be inside the choice of the scuba diving fins. There are blade fins, slice fins, rotating blade fins, and much more. In case you started out with the basics with scuba diving fins, you will get the experience of the kick plus the speed. You will definitely go for the fins. You will definitely now select again, which among the many fins would probably in fact provide you with cutting edge.

The paddle fins tend to be suggested for scuba diving as these can offer supply the better propulsion, and divers can navigate around under water. The paddle fins have been completely reinvented, this time by means of pivoting blades. This gives you the more significant push, additionally, the ease of walking in the water.

Now, have you made the decision just what diving fins are you going to get?

Self Improvement, Self Help, Spiritual - Build On The Spiritual Side ...

Are we a bunch of robots? No, of course not. We are living, breathing beings who think, feel, love, offer help and support, create, develop ideas, form beliefs and express ourselves in countless ways. There is definitely more to life than our routines. There is an immensely rich spiritual life we can enjoy, if we allow ourselves to.

By building on the spiritual side of your life, you bring balance and a sense of inner peace to your existence. Developing your spiritual side offers numerous benefits, including achieving a sense of purpose for yourself and minimizing the effects of daily stress.

In my autobiography, Another Day Without A Cage: My Breakthrough From Self-Imprisonment To Total Empowerment, I share with my readers several experiences I went through that built me up spiritually. Growing up, I was well aware of a spiritual guidance, and through my many ups and downs, that spiritual sense continued to uphold me and bring serenity. A well-balanced life is one where the spiritual component is strong.

How do you strengthen your own spiritual life? Try these tips:

1. Pray or meditate -- or do both. Do what is most comfortable for you according to your belief system. Meditation will quiet your mind and relax your body, allowing you to think more clearly, feel emotionally stronger, and even rest better. Prayer will connect you to something greater than yourself. Feel free to express your innermost thoughts during prayer, from thankfulness to any concerns you may be experiencing to your heartfelt goals and ambitions. Many people find strength through some form of prayer.

2. Assess your values. You live by a system of values. Every so often, it is important to reflect on these values. Do you know what your values are? Are they posted where you can see them? Are you living by them? Once you have acknowledged them, assess where you stand with them, and adjust your life as needed so that your choices and actions match up with your core values. For example, if risk-taking is one of your core values, then taking risks should be a part of your life. If honesty is one of your core values, reflect on this value often to verify that you are living true to yourself.

3. Help someone else. Nothing boosts your spiritual life like reaching out and helping somebody. Whether the recipient is someone in your inner circle or a total stranger doesn't really matter. What is important is that you take the time to improve someone else's condition. Remember that our animal friends count, too. Whatever we do to help another will come back to us as spiritual growth. My life changed when I adopted my two Basset Hounds Apollo and Winslow, two of the funniest and most loving characters of my life. They remind me often and eternally of the importance of animal rescue and the power we all have to change others' lives.

Whatever your own personal meaning of spirituality, find it, develop it, and live it and watch your life evolve.

home improvement, DIY, carpet cleaning - Great Advice For ...

There is no time to lose when it comes to home repairs, and you might feel handling the work yourself is something you don't have time for. But you're wrong! It doesn't take long to make home improvements. This guide will help you do home improvement projects easily.

When doing home improvement, be sure you know about the longevity of different items. A chimney, for example, can last upwards of a century. Wooden decks may only be useful for about 15 years. Various types of flooring can last anywhere from 20 years (vinyl) to 100 years (oak). Make sure to consider factors such as these prior to getting involved in a home improvement project.

Change the accessories to give each room of your home a fresh look. It's truly amazing the amount of difference a few bright pillows or a new wall hanging can make in a room. New drapes can also add a little something extra.

You can use 3-D tile instead of buying art for your walls. For instance, a three-dimensional tile works great if you contrast the colors. You can even buy some canvas and a frame and paint colored squares. Anything colorful can work as art.

You don't need to live in a mansion to own a chandelier. A classy-looking chandelier that can pull together an elegant living or dining room can be yours for less than five hundred dollars. Bring out the beauty in hand-cut crystal or glass chandeliers with total wattage of 200 to 400 watts.

Add some protection to all of your floors before painting. If you don't, you will have quite a mess on your wood floors or carpeting. Use layered old newspapers to accomplish this. Other alternatives include a drop cloth or large plastic tarp; both are available at most home improvement centers.

If you are using home improvement to increase the value of your home, consider the porch. A porch is something a person will see when first looking at your home. Incorporate some potted plants, or even some new paint. It's not unreasonable to believe that your home improvement project could potentially generate returns that far exceed your initial investment. Little things like this can go a very long way.

Use a check or charge card payment when you pay your contractor, so you have proof of payment and have the option to stop the payment if necessary. This will ensure that you aren't taken by a scam artist. Credit cards are a good payment method if you need to dispute the work rendered.

Be sure to turn off your water main before you begin working on your water pipes. You really need to know where the shut off valve to the water in your home is located so you can turn it off to work on the sink. Otherwise, you may flood your home!

A chandelier can look at home in any style of decor. Even some very fancy and very attractive chandeliers can be purchased for well under $500, and they can add over a thousand dollars worth of value to the home. If you want a chandelier that will stand out, try getting one that puts out 200-400 watts.

Talk to your contractor and stay honest with your budget so that he can tailor his activities to your needs. Honesty helps your contractor plan for the project. This can help them get the best deal on materials they need. This ensures that everyone wins.

Home improvement projects can range from minor to major projects. You are in good company! You have just read some tips for making home improvement easier. Hopefully, this article has rewarded you with useful knowledge that can help make your home improvement project a smashing success. You should stop reading and get improving!

NEW DELHI (AP) ? A state in western India has declared war on animal poaching by allowing forest guards to shoot hunters on sight in an effort to curb rampant attacks on tigers and other wildlife.

The government in Maharashtra says injuring or killing suspected poachers will no longer be considered a crime.

Forest guards should not be "booked for human rights violations when they have taken action against poachers," Maharashtra Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam said Tuesday. The state also will send more rangers and jeeps into the forest, and will offer secret payments to informers who give tips about poachers and animal smugglers, he said.

No tiger poachers have ever been shot in Maharashtra, though cases of illegal loggers and fishermen being shot have led to charges against forest guards, according to the state's chief wildlife warden, S.W.H. Naqvi.

But the threat could act as a significant deterrent to wildlife criminals, conservationists said. A similar measure allowing guards to fire on poachers in Assam has helped the northeast state's population of endangered one-horned rhinos recover.

"These poachers have lost all fear. They just go in and poach what they want because they know the risks are low," said Divyabhanusinh Chavda, who heads the World Wildlife Fund in India and is a key member of the National Wildlife Board, which advises the prime minister. In many of India's reserves, guards are armed with little more than sticks.

India faces intense international scrutiny over its tiger conservation, as it holds half of the world's estimated 3,200 tigers in dozens of wildlife reserves set up since the 1970s, when hunting was banned.

Illegal poaching remains a stubborn and serious threat, with tiger parts in particular fetching high prices on the black market because of demand driven by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners.

According to the Wildlife Protection Society of India, 14 tigers have been killed by poachers in India so far this year ? one more than in all of 2011. The tiger is considered endangered, with its habitat shrinking more than 50 percent in the last quarter-century while its numbers declined from an estimated 5,000-7,000 in the 1990s, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Eight of this year's tiger poaching deaths in India occurred in Maharashtra, including one whose body was found last week chopped into pieces with its head and paws missing in Tadoba Tiger Reserve. Forest officials have also found traps in the reserve, where about 40 tigers live.

Naqvi said encounters between Maharashtra's forest guards and poachers were rare because poachers generally hunt the nocturnal big cats at night. He said the state's offer to pay informers from a new fund worth about 5 million rupees ($90,000) would likely be more effective. "We get very few tips, so this will really help," he said.

But conservationists said the fact that poachers are rarely seen has more to do with low ranger numbers, and that increasing patrols around the clock would help.

Dozens of other animals are also targeted by hunters across India, including one-horned rhinos and male elephants prized for their tusks, and other big cats like leopards hunted or poisoned by villagers afraid of attacks on their homes or livestock.

A recent study on hunting in India noted 114 species of mammals were being actively hunted across the country, with dozens of birds and reptiles also under attack.

"There has been an onslaught going on in India," said William Laurance, a conservation biologist at James Cook University in Australia and one of the three authors of the study, which was published in Biological Conservation journal in April. "It's a serious threat to wildlife, along with habitat encroachment and forest degradation. A lot of species are clinging to survival in remote areas."

It's unclear whether Maharashtra's example in targeting poachers will be followed by other states, though tiger poaching has also been a major problem in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in recent years. The hunting of male elephants for their tusks has skewed the sex ratio, and there are now about 100 female elephants for every male in the south.

According to the April study, some of the most rampant hunting is occurring in the eastern Himalayas, where high numbers of army troops are deployed and some hunt for sport, and in the northeast near the porous border with China and Myanmar, where hunting is a way of life and sometimes an economic necessity for tribal communities.

"The remarkable thing in India is that there is still anything alive at all with 1.2 billion people," Laurance said. "As populations grow, an increase in hunting pressure is a classic thing that happens."

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) ? A man survived a plunge of at least 180 feet over Niagara Falls in an apparent suicide attempt Monday ? only the third person known to have lived after going over the falls without a safety device.

Niagara Parks Police said witnesses reported seeing the man climb over a railing 20 to 30 feet out over the Horseshoe Falls at 10:20 a.m. and "deliberately jump" into the Niagara River. Seriously injured, he surfaced in the lower Niagara River basin near the Journey Behind the Falls observation platform and managed to make it to shore on his own.

"He waded ashore," said Platoon Chief Dan Orescanin of the Niagara Falls, Ontario, Fire Department. "He must have gotten swept into an eddy, floated over there and was able to get out on his own.

"That's another stroke of luck," Orescanin said. "If he was in the main current, he would have been swept down river."

Orescanin said the man was conscious and talking at first but got quiet. He appeared to have chest injuries, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung, Orescanin said.

The man was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with what police initially said were life-threatening injuries. Hospital spokeswoman Agnes Bongers said later that the man was critically injured but was expected to survive.

Authorities did not release the man's name.

Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side of the river, is the tallest of the three main falls, higher than the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

The man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, was rescued about two hours later after fire department rescuers rappelled down the steep and rocky gorge and pulled him in a basket back up the cliff.

"It was very difficult. Between the shale and the boulders, and everything is wet and slick. It's slimy," Orescanin said.

About seven rescuers struggled to carry the basket up to a point where it could be lifted with ropes suspended from an aerial truck.

"We had to basically hand carry him back up, a foot at a time, up the rope," the chief said.

The rescue came weeks before daredevil Nik Wallenda plans to walk over Niagara Falls on a tightrope after convincing United States and Canadian officials to grant an exception to laws prohibiting stunting.

Although several daredevils have survived trips over the falls in barrels or other contraptions, beginning with Annie Edison Taylor in 1901, few have survived unprotected. In 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward was swept over the falls wearing a life jacket and survived.

Authorities don't believe Monday's plunge, on a warm and sunny Victoria Day holiday in Canada, was a stunt.

"Based on witness statements and surveillance video, it doesn't appear in any way, shape, or form that this was anything other than a suicide attempt," Niagara Parks Police Sgt. Chris Gallagher told WIVB in Buffalo.

More than 6 million cubic feet of water go over the brink of the falls every minute during peak daytime tourist hours, according to the Niagara Parks Commission.

The last person to go over the falls unaided and live was a 30-year-old Canadian man in March 2009. In October 2003, Kirk Jones, an out-of-work auto parts salesman from Michigan survived his plunge over the falls.

After getting the call Monday, rescuers didn't immediately know whether the man at the bottom of the gorge had gone over the brink or entered the water at the base.

"When we heard that he had gone over the falls we were shocked," Orescanin said.
