Canje family battered by bandits

A shopkeeper has been hospitalised while two of her children were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and sent home after three bandits invaded their home on Monday night, while they were entertaining neighbours.
At Lot 974 New Area Canefield on Tuesday, Wayne Williams recounted to this newspaper that his wife Caloutie Chandersain was battered by the bandits who attacked their house shortly after 18:00h on Monday.

The Canje house invaded by bandits

According to Williams, his wife resisted one of the bandits and was gun butted in the face and mouth.
She sustained broken teeth and lips while the gunman also smashed the gun several times in the back of her head. With her face covered in blood, she was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she remains a patient.
Williams said his son and daughter were also injured during the incident, but were sent home after being seen by a doctor at the New Amsterdam Hospital.? Relating what he remembered, Williams explained that he was inside the house relaxing in a hammock while his wife was sitting under a shed outside the shop she manages.
He said his wife at the time was talking to four neighbours when three men entered the premises. His wife told one of the men to leave with his toy gun following which the man struck her in the mouth. Before he could have come to her aid, another man entered the house and ordered him and his daughter to lie face down.
Two of the men then ordered the couple?s 20-year-old son into the room demanding money and valuables. The men severely beat the victims while ordering him to give up the things demanded. One of Williams? daughters who tried to resist one of the bandits was also struck in the face. The sixteen-year- old girl became hysterical after being whipped and begun screaming. Blood was pouring from the wounds on her face, and the face of her mother who was guarded by a third bandit outside the house.
The family told the bandits they were already robbed during the day and had nothing to give. After ransacking the house and not finding much, the men decided to leave. Williams said that his son began vomiting and crying out for pain in his back and abdomen after the robbers left.
The men left with a laptop computer, an electric iron, a still camera, a cellular phone and an undisclosed amount of cash. At the time of the robbery, a neighbour, Krishnanand Narain, who was robbed in a similar fashion last June by four bandits, was also at the shop.
Besides the family and himself, there were two other customers at the shop, a young girl and a boy about eight-years-old. They were all held hostage by the bandits and were huddled in a corner outside the house until the ordeal ended. Narain said the horrible memories of the attack on his house flashed through his mind and the experience was all too familiar. The men were well dressed and had on caps, under which they covered their faces. Up to late Tuesday night, police did not arrest anyone in connection with the robbery.
