The Edmonton mayor who played a vital role in bringing the 1978 Commonwealth Games to the city will be honoured with his name on a new outdoor sports complex.
The Ivor Dent Sports Park, at Ellerslie Road and 50 Street just off Anthony Henday Drive, will be named for the former mayor who also championed LRT development and expansion of the river valley trails.
?Our dad was a big believer in the value of physical activity. He was always proud of the growth in public recreation facilities while he was an alderman and mayor, and would be in awe at the size of this new sports park. Our family is very pleased to see his name on the park,? said his son, Charles Dent.
The park was used as a shooting range during the games and has been transformed into a 138-acre multi-sport facility with 24 fields for soccer, rugby, cricket, kabaddi, football and lacrosse.
Dent was awarded the Order of Canada in 1984 and passed away on March 30, 2009.
The park is scheduled to be fully open in 2014.
