Lagos ? Mrs Abosede Okunuga, the Director of Physiotherapy Services, Lagos State Health Service Commission, said on Saturday that good diet without regular exercise could still lead to obesity.
Okunuga said this during the World Physical Therapy Day (WPTD) which ?is observed every?Sept. 8?and organised by the Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy with the theme ?Fit for Life?.
?The event we are having is to reiterate the need for people to engage in physical activities in promoting health.
?We are also advocating and spreading the role of a physiotherapist to the rural areas, where we tell them to immunise their children against polio, which is also part of what a physiotherapist is specialised in.?
The Chairman of the society, Mrs Benedicta Njokama, said that people could have wellness throughout their lifetime when they engaged in fitness activities.
?People need to know that they are responsible for their well-being and so should take their health seriously by being physically active.
?Physiotherapists are part of the medical team in the promotion of healthy living through consistent advocacy on engaging in physical activities.?
In a remarkd the Public Relations Officer of the society, Mr Ayobami Oni, not that that non-communicable diseases were increasing due to urbanisation.
He urged Nigerians to desist from living sedentary lifestyles, avoid poor diet and lack of physical activities, as ways of reducing non-communicable diseases.
?Physiotherapists are the experts in these areas as we promote health, wellness and fitness.
?Physical activity is a key factor to prolonging life and this year?s event featured dance, which is part of our culture, as a way of encouraging people to be fit.?
Oni urged Nigerians to make it consistent and a norm to promote fitness throughout life. (NAN)
