Outreach programs that offer a taste of real-world science and pair secondary students with enthusiastic young researchers are key to promoting careers in science and technology, according to University of British Columbia researchers.

In a paper published this week in PLoS Computational Biology, UBC researchers document their work on the Genomics Field Trip Program hosted at the Michael Smith Laboratories (MSL). Joanne Fox, Jennifer McQueen and Jody Wright outline the benefits of research-based field trips, offering a blueprint for designing science outreach programs.

"Genomics is important because students will deal with challenging questions and they need to be informed and science-literate," says Fox, a faculty member at the Michael Smith Laboratories.. "For example, they may have their personal genome sequence and they may have to decide who has access to that information."

The Genomics Field Trip program encourages exploration of the sciences through a full day genomics experience which takes place at the MSL laboratories. Program instructors are typically UBC graduate students who benefit from the experience by developing their ability to communicate scientific ideas to the general public. They also develop skills in lesson design and delivery, allowing them to enhance their instructional skills, something that does not always occur in teaching assistantship positions.

Fox hopes the success of the Genomics Field Trip Program will inspire other institutions to develop similar programs. The recommendations included in her paper can be used as a blueprint for science programs and an online genomics toolkit provides valuable information for lesson plans.

"This type of program helps graduate students remember why science is so exciting, and in turn inspires the next generation of scientists," Fox explains.

Chinese company try to take over Vestas

30 August 2012 | news Newsdesk

The ailing Danish wind giant Vestas is target for a take over by the much smaller Chinese Ming Yang. It is the Danish tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet who breaks the story. According to sources close to the process, Ming Yang talked about a takeover at a meeting last week in Hamburg.

Buying Vestas? debt

Ming Yang has realised that the structure of ownership, with thousands of small shareholders, makes a normal takeover very difficult. The strategy supposedly is to buy Vestas? huge debt, and try to get control of the company by the back door.

With a market share of only 3.2 percent in 2010 compared to Vestas? 15.5 percent it is the mice planning to takeover the elephant, but with a credit of DDK 30 billion (US$ 5 billion) from China Development Bank, Ming Yang might be able to do it. Vestas? Market value is only DDK 8 billion equal to 0.4 price/book value. Vestas? long term liabilities are DDK 34 billion.

Vestas negotiating with Mitsubishi

While the Chinese plans to get control of Vestas, the company itself desperately seeks new capital. They are negotiating a strategic pact with Japanese Mitsubishi, which may end up with an off shore joint venture. The two companies might be able to benefit mutual from cooperating.
Mitsubishi earlier this year lost a patent battle to General Electric, making life difficult for the Japanese on the important American market. At the moment Mitsubishi is not able to deliver to their American customers, but Vestas has lot of capacity in US and no patent issues.

Vestas has most to gain

Jacob Pedersen, an analyst at Sydbank, said that Denmark?s Vestas potentially has the most to gain from any joint venture.

?If Vestas could move a lot of debt from their balance sheet to a joint venture that would make a lot of sense,? he said.

?One of the issues surrounding the company is the indebtedness and if [debt] covenants are being breached, so it would be an advantage moving some of the debt to another company.?

As both companies look to expand business at sea, tying the knot in an offshore joint venture would be the most likely outcome of an agreement, he said.

?They are both developing offshore turbines. Vestas has ground breaking technology as I understand it, which is very expensive, and Mitsubishi?s technology is not nearly as good. Mitsubishi has the money and capital and [would] get the technology in return,? Pedersen said.
However, Pedersen said that any partnership would likely be destined to operate in the offshore-wind market only, and only as a joint venture, which would be set up as separate company.

First lady says she isn't watching the convention

CBS

First Lady Michelle Obama stressed the importance of watching political conventions during a Wednesday night appearance on "Late Show."

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

As the Republican National Convention was wrapping up its second night in Tampa, David Letterman turned much of his show over to Michelle Obama. Instead of discussing politics, the two mostly had a conversation about parenting.

The first lady talked about sending her daughters to sleep-away camp, counseled Letterman on getting his son involved in sports, and explained more about her efforts to improve the health of kids? diets and ensuring that veterans were able to get jobs after leaving the army. The two also bonded over the great taste of kale chips, so the president can likely expect a big check from the ever-powerful kale lobby.

Of course, the two couldn?t avoid politics entirely. Eventually, after all the healthy diet options had been discussed, Letterman finally asked the first lady her thoughts on the RNC convention.

?I, as the wife of the guy they are running against, tend not to watch it, but I think it?s important for everyone to watch these conventions,? she said. ?This is the time when you get to know the party, you get to know the platforms, and you get to understand the candidates.?

She?ll be taking on a starring role soon enough, considering her upcoming speech at the Democratic National Convention. Obama didn?t offer any details about the contents, though Letterman volunteered to send her a joke if she needed one. He also brought up the old story about Mitt Romney?s treatment of his dog on vacation, asking if the Obamas had ever thought about strapping the White House dog to the roof of the car.

?Only the best for Bo. He?s used to traveling on Air Force One,? she said.

Maher is Politically Incorrect on Leno

Jay Leno also went with a political guest, though his was more inclined to roll up his sleeves and engage in some old-fashioned trashing of the other side.

Bill Maher made no apologies for that combativeness. The ?Real Time? host said on the ?Tonight Show,? ?People say they want clean campaigns. No. They want ?The Hunger Games.??

He offered tepid praise for Ann Romney?s convention speech but had less kind things to say about New Jersey governor Chris Christie, noting that he followed her feel-good speech with some angry rhetoric.

?Isn?t this emblematic of the Republican Party? A woman says something we all agree with that?s reasonable, and then a meathead white guy comes out and tells her to shut up,? Maher said.

Maher is not expecting much for Mitt Romney?s speech Thursday (?He has the oratorical skills of the On-Star operator?), and doesn?t expect the pick of Paul Ryan as the Republican vice presidential candidate to make a difference. ?If it ever mattered, it would have mattered last time, when the world?s oldest man picked the world?s stupidest woman,? he said.

And while he?s disappointed in the Democrats, it?s safe to say that the man who gave a million dollars to the Obama campaign won?t be changing sides in 2012.

?Let?s not forget that the Republican symbol is an ?R? because that?s the sound a pirate makes when he robs you,? he said.

Cain takes ?Daily Show? stage

Jon Stewart took advantage of his place in Tampa to bring on one of the more engaging Republican candidates in Herman Cain, who sought and lost the nomination that Romney received.

Say this about Cain: He?s never dull. And he?s no Romney, in that he?s willing to put more of his personality out there on display.

?It?s a difference of style. My style and personality is different from Governor Romney,? Cain said. ?I don?t repress my personality at all. What you see is what you get.?

Stewart also spent a lot of time tearing down the GOP in his comedy bits. Reince Priebus, Chairman of the RNC, didn?t impress Stewart with his remarks early in the convention. ?If the tone you were going for was Angry Drunk Guy, you nailed it!? he said.

Nor was he impressed with the ?We Built This!? theme that was evident in Tuesday?s speeches. ?When was the last time we heard a catchphrase that was such a peculiar mix of braggadocio and whiny petulance?? he asked.

The screen then cut to a clip of Charlie Sheen saying his catchphrase: ?Yeah, winning!?

But then again, winning is what this is all about, right?

Official: China's growth stabilizing at slow pace

(AP) ? Government efforts to reverse China's economic slump are taking effect and growth is "stabilizing at a slow pace," the head of the country's planning agency said Wednesday.

The statement by the minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission came amid a flurry of mixed signals that show some activity picking up but export orders and corporate profits weakening.

"The government's policies and measures have been effective and the country's economic growth is stabilizing at a slow pace," the official Xinhua News Agency paraphrased Zhang Ping as saying in a meeting with legislators.

The report gave no other details of Zhang's report or a forecast of when economic growth that fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter might rebound.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is trying to pump up the economy by approving a wave of new industrial investments. Authorities have resisted calls for more aggressive stimulus after huge spending in response to the 2008 crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

Premier Wen Jiabao has expressed confidence China can meet its economic targets but warned last month the job situation will become "more complex and severe." The Communist Party's official growth target this year is 7.5 percent.

Forecasters expect growth to rebound late this year or in early 2013 but say a recovery will be too weak to drive global growth without improvement in the United States and Europe.

Unusually weak data from July and August have fed worries China's rebound might be delayed still further.

Profits at industrial companies in auto manufacturing, steel production and other fields declined in July for a fourth month, data showed this week. That might hurt investment, a pillar of Beijing's recovery plan.

July export growth fell to 1 percent, well below forecasts, adding to pain for manufacturers that have been battered by weak global demand. Thousands of small companies have been driven out of business, raising the threat of job losses and unrest as the Communist Party prepares to hand over power to younger leaders.

Wen, the premier, called last weekend for efforts to stabilize trade growth. He said the current quarter is a "critical period" for China to meet its annual trade targets.

Zhang, the planning official, also said government curbs on the housing market have "effectively suppressed" speculative activity blamed for soaring prices, according to Xinhua. It noted that prices for new residential buildings declined in July in 58 out of 70 major Chinese cities.

Credit card lending suffers biggest fall in six years

LONDON (Reuters) - British credit card lending suffered its biggest net fall in nearly six years in July, in a sign that households are reluctant to borrow more and casting doubt on any imminent rebound in consumer spending.

Bank of England figures on Thursday showed that net credit card lending fell by 147 million pounds, the biggest drop since August 2006, dragging overall unsecured consumer lending down by the largest margin since February this year.

The figures dampen hopes of a strong rebound in economic activity in July after nine months of recession, and contrast with official retail sales data that showed unexpectedly strong growth last month.

Mortgage approvals also remained weak, recovering slightly from June's 18-month low and coming in around economists' expectations at 47,312. But net mortgage lending was much higher than expected at 1.1 billion pounds, the biggest increase since January.

Nonetheless, the data back economists' forecasts for British house prices to stay flat or fall slightly over the coming year. Mortgage lender Halifax reported a 0.6 percent annual fall in house prices for the three months to July.

July's data is the last before the Bank's new Funding for Lending Scheme takes effect from August 1. Under the scheme, banks get access to cheap funding on condition that they pass it on in lending to businesses and home-buyers.

Before the 2008 financial crisis, monthly mortgage approvals ran at around 90,000, but the number of home sales has slumped since then and the property market has ceased to be a major driver of consumer spending.

Last week similar data from the British Bankers' Association showed a modest pick-up in the number of mortgage approvals in July after approvals on this measure sank to the lowest in 3-1/2 years in June, due partly to unusually wet weather and extra public holidays.

In one bright spot for the central bank, its preferred gauge of money supply, M4 excluding intermediate other financial corporations, rose at its fastest annual pace in more than three years. It grew by 3.9 percent, suggesting that the more than 325 billion pounds of quantitative easing asset purchases so far is having some impact on the money supply.

Flipboard Hits 20 Million Users, 3 Billion Flips Per Month

flipboard-ipad1Oh hey, remember when Flipboard had 5 million users? That was the official figure at the end of last year. It was also the number that came out just as the social magazine app was launching on iPhone, after having previously been an iPad-only app. And it was also six months before the app arrived on Android. Well, apparently, the move to the smartphone platform has been good for the company's growth - today, Flipboard is announcing new metrics, including a jump to 20 million users and a reach of over 3 billion flips per month.

Spiritual Retreats on an Around the World Trip? | BootsnAll Travel ...

Even though a round the world trip is one of the most amazing life experiences you?ll have, it isn?t all fun, games, and relaxation. Taking time off requires that you plan ahead. From quitting your job, selling your house, your car, or other belongings, you will have to tie up loose ends before you even embark on your trip. The trip itself, too, necessitates that you think before you act; you?ll have to look into ticket prices, accommodation rates, health insurance, visas, and numerous other practical issues before you go.

Once you are actually on the road, the challenges continue. The extent to which you have to continue planning practical aspects such as flights will depend on how far you planned ahead initially. Similarly, depending on your financial situation, you?ll be faced with fewer or more economic preoccupations both before and during your trip. In fact, many long-term travelers work as they go along. Last but not least, chances are that if you are traveling on a budget, you will moreover have to deal with noisy hostels, dirty bathrooms, potential food poisoning threats, further health issues, and more.

Though the experience will be life-changing and amazing, contrary to popular belief, long-term travel is not one big, long vacation. All in all, it can take a toll on your body. A mental or spiritual retreat can provide a healthy break from these challenges, allowing you to rejuvenate. A retreat can even allow you to keep traveling longer as you get back on the road re-energized. In fact, the reflections you undergo during your retreat might even lead you to change your travel plans, making your RTW trip a more enriching experience as a whole.

Retreats: a brief history

Retreats have their origins in religion. ?If we call a retreat a series of days passed in solitude and consecrated to practices of asceticism, in particular to prayer and penance, it is as old as Christianity,? the Catholic Encyclopedia writes. ?Without referring to the customs of the Prophets of the Old Testament, the forty days which Jesus Christ passed in the desert after His baptism is an example which has found many imitators in all ages of the Church.? Similarly, Buddhism, which is said to have come about in northern India in the 5th century B.C.E, ?traces its origin to Siddhartha Gautama [who] attained an enlightened state of being that marked the end of attachments (and therefore suffering), and ultimately, upon his death, release from the cycle of rebirth (samsara),? according to the Patheos Library.

In the modern world, the reasons for which people go on retreats may vary. While some people continue to embark on retreats for religious and spiritual purposes, others seek more of an escape from the quotidian stresses of work and life back home. Further reasons may include the need for reflection and isolation, which is often difficult to achieve in one?s everyday routine. The opportunity to travel and experience a different destination may be a reason for going on a retreat in and of itself.

This increased interest in retreats is reflected in popular culture. Elizabeth Gilbert?s book Eat, Pray, Love, for example, recounts the story of a female protagonist enlightened in an Indian ashram. Stories like Gilbert?s are not only successful as books but are moreover turned into Hollywood films (in this case featuring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem). But movie screens aren?t the only place in which retreats are popular. Yoga, for example, is gaining popularity among baseball players, as the Washington Times reports. In fact, yoga has even become important for kids with disabilities.

What kind of retreat is right for me?

When you start looking into a retreat, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Type of retreat. Do you want to go on a spiritual or mental retreat?
  • Day-to-day routine. What will your day-to-day routine be like? Are there activities, such as yoga or meditation involved?
  • Instructors. Will there be qualified instructors to help you reach enlightenment?
  • Facilities/Services. What kinds of facilities or services are provided? Think hot water, showers, laundry, electricity, accommodation, food, etc.
  • Degree of isolation. While some retreats will require that you isolate yourself completely, others are based on group interaction.
  • Duration. Some programs require that you stay a certain length, while others are flexible. Inquire about whether you can stay longer or drop out early.
  • Destination. Is destination important to you? Many yoga practitioners, for example, will prefer India over any other country. Rural destinations are also usually more popular due to the peace and quiet they offer.
  • Cost. There are retreats of all kinds, from free programs to the most luxurious ones.
  • Post-retreat. No need to decide just yet what you plan to do right after your retreat, but do come prepared. You wouldn?t want to end up without any money, stranded at an isolated facility with no way of getting back home.

Planning 101

Essentially, there are two ways to go about planning a retreat:

  1. Making a booking or reservation through an already established retreat
  2. Putting it together yourself.

As is the case with any kind of program abroad (be it study, volunteer, or work abroad), going through an organization has its advantages and disadvantages. Usually, going through an organization will incur higher costs, as you will have to pay the organization for their services. In return, however, you have a support network that can guide you to and around the destination, as well as take you through the retreat as a whole. If you decide to put a retreat together yourself, you will have to do a lot more planning.

Going with the flow

Especially if it is your first time going on a retreat, you might find it easier to go with an organized program. The structure that programs provide will ensure that you have people there to help you if you need them. Qualified instructors, too, can bring you closer to rejuvenation and enlightenment than if you tried to get there on your own. Some possible options include:

  • Vipassana, one of India?s oldest meditation techniques, prides itself as being a ?way of self-transformation through self-observation,? based ?on the deep interconnection between mind and body.? Vipassana courses are 10 days long and offered at no cost at centers worldwide. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance; spaces fill up fast.
  • Yoga. Sites such as Yogafinder.com or Yogaholidays.net will help you find yoga retreats worldwide. You can search by retreats and retreat centers.
  • Spiritual tours, meditation retreats, and pilgrimages are listed through the Association of Spiritual Retreats at spiritualretreats.com. For the Top 10 Meditation Retreats selected by Travel+Leisure, click here.
  • Religious retreats are also listed at findthedivine.com.

Doing it your way

By creating your very own spiritual retreat, you can adapt it specifically to your needs. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Seek solitude. Find a destination that will allow you to be by yourself. Rural areas with pleasant natural surroundings are particularly calming.
  • Choose accommodation. Depending on your preferences and budget, the place you stay will vary. While some can afford a luxurious spa, others will prefer to camp alongside a river, waking up to the chirping of birds. In either case, look into whether the location will be safe.
  • Meditate on your own. If you have never meditated before, this might seem a bit difficult. In that case, Psychic Michele Knight recommends that you at least be mindful. ?As much as possible, try and be in one place at any one time,? she writes.
  • Bring soothing music. Meditative music or sounds can be helpful in centering your focus. Try Holosync, for example.
  • Stay offline. Checking emails multiple times per day is said to increase stress. Give yourself a break from the computer, smartphone, TV and other technological devices. Focus on yourself and your goals instead.
  • Drink and eat healthy. Vipassana retreats, for example, only allow you to have vegetarian foods. You don?t have to stick to fruits and vegetables, but giving your body a detox by eating more healthy foods can help you rejuvenate your energies.

Coping with the challenges

A retreat isn?t always as rosy as it sounds. At some ashrams, for example, you are not allowed to speak to anyone. Similarly, focusing on yourself can bring out problems that you otherwise hide. You might find yourself crying, desperate, and otherwise overwhelmed. Again, especially if this is your first retreat, you might consider going through an organized program so that you have qualified staff to fall back on.

Come back a better person

Having faced these challenges and looked within yourself, you will grow as a person. Long-term travel is a unique opportunity to reflect more closely on who you are and who you want to be. It is a chance to immerse yourself in different situations and think about your perception of the world, and your place in it. By coming to accept yourself, you can begin a new life, relaxed and full of joy and happiness.

Syria rebels 'destroy five helicopters' in raid

Syrian rebels said they destroyed five helicopters in a raid on a military airport between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, while state television said the attack was repelled.

Abu Mossab, a rebel who said he took part in the attack, told AFP via Skype that rebels shelled Taftanaz military airport with two tanks captured from the army and destroyed five helicopters.

"We destroyed five helicopters as well as buildings in the airport," Abu Mossab said, although the facility remained in army hands after the raid in which the rebels lost two men before pulling back.

"The regime's MiG planes continue to bomb houses in Taftanaz, which has been emptied of its inhabitants," the rebel added.

Syrian state television said the military repelled the attack with the airport suffering "no material damage."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier reported fierce fighting near the airport and helicopter raids on the nearby town of Taftanaz.

Initial reports indicated government troops suffered 14 casualties in Taftanaz, while two rebels and a civilian were killed elsewhere in Idlib province, according to the Britain-based Observatory.

The airport has been the target of several attacks in past weeks by insurgents entrenched in Aleppo and Idlib, which have come under daily shelling by government forces.

In Aleppo city, where the army and rebels have battled for over a month for control, fierce clashes broke out between the two sides in several districts, according to the watchdog.

And in Damascus, activists reported a third straight day of army attacks on rebel strongholds in the eastern outer belt of the city, collectively referred to as East Ghuta.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground, said warplanes and helicopters bombed and strafed all the East Ghuta suburbs.

The Observatory reported attacks by combat helicopters on the eastern suburb of Saqba as well as shelling further inside the city in Zamalka district.

State media said "terrorist mercenaries" had killed four civilians in Zamalka, using its term for rebels fighting government forces since Syria's anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011.

They had "murdered citizens, including women and men, under the eyes of inhabitants ... The terrorists then gathered the bodies of the victims and put them in a mosque in Qadi Askar" district, state news agency SANA said.

It said the assailants had planned to blow up the mosque and then blame the attack on government forces.

Clashes also broke out on Wednesday between rebels and government troops in the eastern Damascus neighbourhood of Qaboon and five civilians were killed in nearby Jubar, the Observatory said.

And in the city of Homs, several districts came under army bombardment, while one person was killed in shelling of Rastan, elsewhere in central Syria, according to the monitoring group.

Violence on Tuesday cost 189 lives: 143 civilians, 14 rebels and 32 soldiers, the Observatory said. It says a total of more than 25,000 people have been killed in the 17-month-long revolt.

Georges St-Pierre says he?s medically cleared to fight

The UFC welterweight champion is now cleared to compete. Georges St-Pierre shared the good news on his Facebook page.

Yesterday was the final chapter of my Road to Recovery- I'm now medically cleared to compete in professional mixed martial arts! Big thanks to all my fans for the amazing support during those 9 long months of rehab- couldn't have done it without you.

St-Pierre tore his ACL while preparing for a bout with Carlos Condit. While GSP rehabbed, Condit fought Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight belt. Condit won with a tight decision. Since he was not given a chance to defend the interim belt, it turned out to be just a really shiny, kind of heavy reminder of Condit's No. 1 contender status.

The two are slated to fight at UFC 154 in Montreal. GSP's last fight was on April 30, 2011, against Jake Shields. By the time he fights on Nov. 17, St-Pierre will have had 572 days off between fights.

Will the time off affect GSP or will he pick up where he left off? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A hardware store clerk was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping, killing and dismembering a lost little boy, bringing an end to a gruesome crime that horrified a tight-knit Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn.

Levi Aron had pleaded guilty this month to lesser charges in a deal that spared him a criminal trial and the possibility of life in prison without parole. When asked Wednesday if he wanted to speak at his sentencing hearing, the 37-year old whispered "no." He will be eligible for parole in 40 years.

Aron wore a black yarmulke, bushy beard and orange prison jumpsuit, and kept his head down and eyes closed for much of the hearing. His attorneys said Aron suffered a head injury as a child that went untreated.

"As a child and a young man, he should have been treated for his mental illness," attorney Howard Greenberg said. Outside court, his attorneys said Aron was sorry ? but a public apology would ring false.

"He's sorry and he wished he hadn't done it," attorney Pierre Bazile said.

Aron admitted he kidnapped and killed 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky after the boy approached him on a Brooklyn street and asked for directions on July 11, 2011. The boy was Hasidic, an ultra-Orthodox version of Judaism, and the killing shocked the community in Borough Park, a safe and somewhat insular neighborhood home to one of the world's largest communities of Orthodox Jews outside Israel. Aron, who lived nearby, was Orthodox but not Hasidic.

Despite the outpouring of support for the family, there were few people in the courtroom Wednesday. Aron's family did not attend the sentencing, nor did Leiby's family. A prosecutor read a statement from the boy's father, Nachman Kletzky, that said, "God did not abandon our son, nor our family, for one second."

"There is no way one can comprehend or understand the pain of losing a child," he wrote. "Esther and I faced this unspeakable tragedy last year when our little boy Leiby was ruthlessly taken from us. ... A day doesn't pass without our thinking of Leiby ? but today we close the door on this one aspect of our tragedy and seek to remember only the gifts that God has bestowed."

The statement was previously read to the news media after Aron's Aug. 9 guilty plea by state assemblyman Dov Hikind, who represents Borough Park and served as a spokesman for the family. He said Wednesday the family wants to put the killing ? and the horiffic details ? behind them.

"It changed our community," Hikind said of the killing, speaking outside court. "It affected everyone in our community. All over the world, people understood what it meant, that it could've been their child."

Leiby got lost on his walk home from a religious day camp. It was the first time he was allowed to walk alone, and he was supposed to travel about seven blocks to meet his mother, but missed his turn.

Barely two days later, detectives found the boy's severed feet, wrapped in plastic, in Aron's freezer. A cutting board and three bloody carving knives were found in the refrigerator. The rest of the boy's body was discovered in bags inside a red suitcase in a trash bin about a mile from Aron's apartment. His legs had been cut from his torso.

The medical examiner's office said Leiby had been drugged then suffocated.

Aron was taken into custody and an unnerving story unfolded about the hours he spent with the boy. Authorities said Aron promised to take Leiby home, but instead he brought the boy upstate to Monsey, N.Y. where he attended a wedding before bringing him back to his apartment. The two watched television before going to sleep. The following morning, Aron left for work at the hardware store, leaving Leiby alone nearly all day in the home.

Meanwhile, a massive search was conducted by his family and friends in the community. When Aron noticed fliers plastered on lampposts with the boy's photo, he says he panicked, went home and suffocated the boy.

Assistant District Attorney Julie Rendelman said Aron knew what he was doing.

"He made a choice that day ... his decision ... was to take this beautiful boy's life," she said.

Aron has said little during court appearances, often looking ahead with a vacant stare, or down at the ground. His attorneys had planned to mount a defense that he was not guilty by reason of mental defect, bolstered by a reported obtained by The Associated Press that said Aron had an adjustment disorder and a personality disorder with schizoid features. "His mood is neutral, practically blank," the psychologist wrote. "The only time he seems to show any emotional response is when he is asked difficult questions about the reason for his incarceration."

During his guilty plea two weeks ago, Aron spoke barely above a whisper. He expressed no remorse and only hinted at motive: At one point he told Judge Neil Firetog he felt "panic" when he found out there was a frantic search on for the boy.

The judge asked him what he decided to do, and he responded simply, "Smother." He also answered yes when asked if he had bound and drugged Leiby.

Leiby's family has filed a lawsuit against Aron's father, who owned the building where his son lived when the boy was killed. They argue that the father should have known something unspeakable was happening under his roof and could have saved the boy if he tried.

Aron's attorneys asked for protective custody for their client because they worry he will hurt himself or be hurt by others. The state department of corrections must decide whether to grant the request.

(AP) ? Music industry online magazine NME says the Foo Fighters have played their "last show for a long time," but an official familiar with the group says it has more concerts scheduled.

As the group wrapped up a gig in Reading, England, on Sunday, Frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd the tour, in support of its latest album "Wasting Light," would be its last ? a comment that has set fans in the Twittersphere alight with concern.

But the official says Grohl's comments were misinterpreted. The official said on condition of anonymity that the band has four U.S. shows in September and that after that it will take some time off "after touring the world for a year."

Grohl is the former drummer for the hugely successful band Nirvana.

Expert Home Improvement Advice You Can Put To Good Use! | Free ...

Even though your kitchen floor looks level to the naked eye, be sure to use a level when installing kitchen cabinets. Start from the highest point on your kitchen floor and set a benchmark line across the length of the wall that the cabinets will be installed to be sure that your counters will be level once installed.

Provide all the contractors placing a bid on your home improvement project with exactly the same information, if possible so they?re bidding on the same project. Include what types of product you want used (hardwood vs laminate, etc.), sketches, magazine photo cut-outs, plans, and written notes. Make sure to specify any items you?d like to be done custom like cabinets.

A great home improvement to make is to add French doors or sliding glass doors. Not only do these doors allow more light inside, but they really can open up an area and make it seem larger. The view of the outdoors increases the apparent volume of the room and modern energy-efficient doors save on heating and cooling costs.

If you are buying tools and equipment for a home improvement project, don?t cheap out on the essentials. For example, a cheaply-built ladder will often fall apart while being used and low-quality paintbrushes may shed bristles into the paint, leaving ugly marks on the walls. Aim for middle-grade equipment if you are on a budget, otherwise, you may be in for some nasty accidents.

If you are working with a contractor, stick to your plan. Making changes when contractors are working can be not only expensive, but also frustrating for the contractors. Wasting their time costs you money, so stay with your original idea. You can always tweak things later if you feel you want something different.

Create a file of photos cut out of magazines or brochures, ideas you?ve written down or sketched, and any plans you?ve had created professionally. Take this with you when you meet with contractors you?re interviewing to do your home improvements and they?ll have an easier time envisioning what you want and then creating a quote.

When it comes to home improvement, have a plan from the start through the finish of your intended improvement. This will ensure that you stay within your budget and that you complete your intended project without the emotional factors being involved. It can be obvious both to a potential buyer and to your pocketbook if a home improvement project is made up as you go.

Prepare for loss of water use. If you are planning any project involving plumbing and/or shutting off the supply of water to the house, make sure you account for your family?s needs. You should at the very least have several buckets of water available for manually flushing the toilet; or you could consider renting a portable lavatory for longer projects.

If you are interested in changing the appearance of your home consider veneer. There are many different types of veneer that you can use. You can practically make your home look however you would like. Rocks and bricks of different types are the most popular which are very popular and versatile.

Before starting a home improvement project look into how the improvements will affect your property taxes. Filing for a permit will red flag your local municipality that they will want to re-evaluate the value of your property to increase their tax revenue. Be sure you will be able to afford increased taxes before beginning the project.

Use shelf brackets to silence your squeaky stairs. Metal shelf brackets can have a multitude of uses. One use is to attach them underneath stairs to stop them from squeaking. Use a drill to quickly screw them into place. Be careful not to allow the screws to protrude through the steps!

Spice up the look of your rooms by using patterned wallpaper on your walls and hanging a conversation piece of artwork. Pick something interesting with many textures or images to look at. Don?t be afraid to go bold and interesting to show a sense of personality through your choices. You can even paint something yourself and hang it up to match your wallpaper.

For those who like to do it themselves instead of hiring someone, there are many ways to learn different techniques for home improvement. Looking on the internet, reading books or talking to more knowledgeable individuals, can help you to glean some useful information. There is much that can be learned for someone who wants to fix up a house.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, take the time to assess the current state of your home. Walking through the residence and figuring out what projects are necessities will help you plan your time and allow you to be more efficient with your work. Any projects that aren?t immediately necessary can be saved for a later date.

As you can see, home improvement can be very easy. With the tips above, you can accomplish the task of turning your home into your private sanctuary, a place you are proud to call home. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and start that home improvement project you?ve been thinking about.

Learning a New Sport Gives You An Additional Exercise Outlet

Learn a new sportFor those of you who are either contemplating starting to work out or have already started exercising, alternating your physical activities can be one of the keys to helping you stick with it.

Exercising regularly should be something you enjoy and look forward to doing. If running around your neighborhood is the only type of exercise you do, for many people after a few months this becomes somewhat repetitive and monotonous and it is understandable why many often quit in their efforts to stay physically active. That?s why it?s extremely beneficial to have multiple workout options to not only keep your mind engaged in different activities, but your body will also be using different muscles and you may find that you will get into quicker and better shape.

However, before attempting to learn a new sport, make sure your body can handle the new physical activity. You may need some preparation so that you help prevent injury. In addition to that, if the new sport requires special instruction or is very technical in nature, then you will definitely need someone to teach you the skills or take a class to learn proper technique.

For instance, maybe you?ve always wanted to rock climb. Sure that can be an excellent outdoor physical sport, however that activity does balance your life on the edge to some degree. You definitely need proper instruction for this extreme sport since you want to learn what type of equipment you will need, proper knots, correct form, in addition to having a spotter, or someone who goes along with you on climbs to ensure you are doing everything as you are supposed to.

With that being said, there are quite a number of opportunities you can explore to get involved and start learning almost any sport or exercise you desire. This can be an exciting opportunity for you to continue on your journey to get in shape, exercise regularly, and learn a skill that you may have longed to learn for awhile now.

Maybe it has been a lifelong dream for you to be a proficient tennis player since you have been a fan of the sport for years now. Everytime one of the four tennis majors comes on television you get reinspired to learn the sport but for some reason you have not crossed the initial hurdle to get started doing so. Or possibly you used to play soccer as a kid and you would love to get back into the sport but really don?t know how or where to begin.

Whatever the case or situation may be, use these ideas to help get you started on the path to exercise freedom and soon you will say goodbye to the typical jog around the neighborhood.

Local Community College Classes or Parks & Recreation Groups
You may be quite surprised to learn what your community actually offers to aspiring sports enthusiasts. Local colleges generally offer traditional sports classes such as tennis, weightlifting, basketball, and soccer in an 6-8 week session for a fee. You can also check with your city hall to see what the parks and recreation department offers. There are often adult tennis and softball leagues that you can join in addition to Zumba, Yoga, TaiChi, Kickboxing and a number of other classes that you can take. These are sometimes the best avenues to check out since they will most likely be located relatively close to your house so the travel time and convenience factor is a definite plus.

Ask Friends You Know or Facebook Contacts
You might already have someone you know who is already proficient in the sport you desire to learn. These individuals could most likely not only show you the basics and get you going, but also have the knowledge and connections to point you in the right direction. This can really cut down the learning curve if someone can help you avoid the beginner mistakes so you can get right to playing and not have to endure the mishaps that others will have if they learn on their own.

You could even post a Facebook question to all your contacts something such as this ?I want to start taking tennis classes and wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction or knows of someone who could help me out.? It?s as simple as that.

Your Local YMCA
This could be another place to check and see what types of classes are offered. The YMCA may require a monthly/yearly membership fee so be sure to get all the details at their front desk. Most generally have a pool, basketball, and racquetball courts, so sports and classes associated with these activities are usually scheduled on a 6-10 week basis with cost depending on each individual location. You may also find classes such as step aerobics, Zumba, kickboxing, Tai Chi, Yoga, cycling, and more.

Online Group Websites Such as Meetup.com
The Internet community can provide a wonderful opportunity for you to find almost any type of group, activity, exercise, or sport that you can think of. Want to join a zumba group? There?s a group of people in Southern California called Zumba of Pasadena with over 400 members strong. What about a group of dog walkers who go on a variety of adventures with their four-legged companions? Definitely! Check out Active Dog Adventurers and you will have found yourself nearly 500 members who are always coming up with fun and exciting trips in the surrounding areas.

It?s understandable if you are a little apprehensive about meeting complete strangers through the Internet, but you?ll find that the members are generally passionate about that activity and are always welcoming new members, especially those who are enthusiastic and eager to participate.

Private Lessons From An Instructor
If you want to learn the basics in a one on one environment (private lessons) or even small group lessons may be the way to go for you. Most instructors for the sport you are looking to learn can generally be found either online through a simple internet search, or possibly through websites such as Craigslist. For the most part, you will be able to find rates like these: Surfing lessons $40 an hour, Snowboarding $20 for a 2 hour group lesson (Big Bear), Tennis group lesson $10 an hour (Cardio Tennis).

Adult Classes and Leagues
You will have the best luck searching for classes and leagues online and checking with your local city hall community recreation department. Again the number and variety of these activities will most likely be dependent on the size of your city/town. However, even if your community does not offer something you are looking for that doesn?t mean you couldn?t be the person to start one up. You may find that there might be a number of other residents that want to do the exact same thing you do. They are just waiting for someone like you to take the lead and get everything started.

Webinar Recap: The Radically Engaged Business: A 2012 ...

For the August edition of our Best Practice Network Webinar Series, we spoke with Carol Cone, the renowned ?mother of cause marketing? and Global Chair of Edelman Business + Social Purpose. This webinar was an encore presentation of Carol?s 2012 VolunteerMatch Client Summit keynote speech, where she wowed audiences with her thoughts on building a purpose-driven business and developing a successful cause marketing strategy.

During the webinar, many attendees also engaged in an exciting Twitter conversation using the hashtag #VMbpn. Check out what they had to say throughout this recap.

?

Here are a few of Carol?s key take-away points.

Employee engagement is key.

According to a recent Gallup study, organizations with high employee engagement had a 3.9 times higher earnings per share growth than those with low employee engagement. Furthermore, engaged employees put in 57% more effort and were 87% less likely to leave the company than disengaged employees.

Employees are the center of your brand, and they can be the center of your cause marketing campaign, too. Happy, productive employees can push your business and cause forward, leading to essential future growth.

?

?

Adapt to an evolving marketplace ? and consumer.

Carol emphasized the importance of understanding that we live in a world in transition, where many social issues are at play. The modern ?citizen consumer? is an empowered member of a shifting marketplace, where customers expect transparency and social responsibility.

86% of global consumers believe that businesses should value social issues as highly as profits. Additionally, a recent Edelman study found that, when choosing between two products with equivalent prices and functions, a consumer is more likely to choose the one that promotes a cause. These consumers are also highly active on various social media platforms, making them more aware and empowered than ever. They expect authenticity and accountability ? and they?ll be able to tell if your company?s efforts are not genuine. Make sure you?re using technology effectively, and that your social media efforts mirror your investment in social issues

?

Tell your story.

Finally, Carol discussed the importance of storytelling in communicating a company?s socially responsible policy and impact. It?s important to focus your efforts on one issue that aligns with your organization?s industry and audience. Only after you?ve chosen a relevant cause should you select a partner.

?

Then, you can begin to shape your narrative, using personal anecdotes and compelling language to form an accessible and inspiring story. Don?t brag about your accomplishments; instead, aim to connect with individuals.

So what exactly is a radically engaged business? It?s an organization that has adapted to a changing world, marketplace, employee and consumer. A radically engaged business knows that corporate social responsibility isn?t just a feel-good addition to your marketing strategy. Investment in social issues is essential for your future growth and continued survival in an ever-evolving marketplace.

Venezuela struggles with refinery blaze after deadly blast

PARAGUANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan firefighters struggled on Sunday to put out a blaze at the country's biggest refinery sparked by an explosion that killed 41 people in one of the global oil industry's deadliest accidents.

Officials at the 645,000 barrel-per-day Amuay refinery are trying to stop the fire still raging at two storage tanks from spreading to other nearby fuel storage facilities. That would delay Amuay's restart beyond the current estimate of two days.

The incident may support world fuel prices, which are already expected to rise with crude oil as tropical storm Isaac threatens to disrupt industry operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

On Sunday, the skeletal remains of a National Guard barracks destroyed in the blast sagged amid broken concrete and rubble, against a backdrop of flames and huge plumes of smoke coming from the two burning tanks.

Officials said a gas leak caused the explosion and that more than 200 homes were damaged by the shockwave. Some were just across the street from the refinery, which is on a peninsula in the Caribbean Sea in western Venezuela.

Puddles of petroleum mixed with water covered roads in the area. The victims from Saturday's blast included 18 National Guard troops and 15 civilians; six remain unidentified. On Sunday, two of the dozens of people wounded died in hospital, a National Guard general told reporters.

President Hugo Chavez, who visited the scene on Sunday, said there were still several people unaccounted for, as well as at least 35 people still in hospital, so the death toll could rise.

Ramon Diaz, 32, who lives in the nearby slum of Ali Primera, told Reuters the blast blew off the roof of his house.

"The fence was pulled up. The windows came out and broke on top of the kids' beds. It was horrible," he said. "We are still scared. We look at those flames and we're still scared."

State TV broadcast footage of flames hovering close to spherical storage units that hold liquefied natural gas. They were not among the nine storage tanks affected by Saturday's blaze.

State oil company PDVSA said it will focus on extinguishing one of the two burning tanks by spraying it with foam. If they cannot put it out on Sunday, they will wait for the fire to burn out on its own - which could take two to three days.

Ramirez told Reuters that PDVSA was considering seeking floating storage in the area -- using tankers to store oil and fuel offshore while the company repairs the main tanks.

AMONG THE DEADLIEST

The incident follows a decade of repeated outages and accidents at PDVSA installations that have prompted allegations of mismanagement by Chavez's government.

In extensive remarks to reporters during his visit to Amuay, Chavez rejected suggestions that negligence had caused the blast. "Lack of maintenance? Who could possibly say this? Only someone who is irresponsible," Chavez said.

He spent nearly ten minutes chiding a reporter for repeating comments by nearby residents who had said that the smell of gas was in the air the day before the explosion.

The blast ranks as one of the deadliest oil industry accidents in recent history, approaching the toll of the 1997 fire at Hindustan Petroleum's Visakhapatnam refinery in India that killed 56, and topping the 2005 BP Texas City refinery blast that killed 15 workers.

Amuay had already partially shut operations at least twice this year due to a small fire and the failure of a cooling unit.

The high death toll was due in part to the location of the National Guard outpost, which had not been moved when the refinery shifted the site of the storage tank area next to where troops were stationed. Ramirez acknowledged to Reuters that the facility was too close to the refinery.

Amuay, together with a neighboring facility, forms part of the Paraguana Refining Center, the second-biggest refinery complex in the world, with an overall capacity of 955,000 bpd. Only India's Jamnagar complex is bigger, at 1.24 million bpd.

Many of Venezuela's oil installations have slums next to them, and sometimes they are located in the middle of cities. In some places, families hang clothes out to dry on fences that surround small oil derricks.

Venezuela has traditionally been a key supplier of fuel to the United States, but U.S. reliance on it has declined sharply over the last five years due in part to repeated unplanned outages at Venezuelan refineries.

In the first five months of 2012, the United States imported just over 50,000 bpd of fuel from Venezuela, down from nearly 290,000 bpd in 2005, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Venezuela still ranks among the top five suppliers of crude oil to the United States.

The Best Art Schools In America | Visual Graphic Arts

Posted on 26 August 2012.

Of the thousands of art schools in America, a few stand out in the art world as the best schools based on academic value. Some are dedicated art schools and some are colleges of general education with outstanding departments.

Rhode Island School of Design enjoys the highest profile in art and design, and superlative respect among experts in the art world. A student with a degree from RISD will have their resume? moved to the top of the pile. It is, however, not without substantial investment. At an average cost of over 100,000.00 per year, only the very serious artist major need apply. That may, in fact, be a large part of the respect given to graduates of this school.

Yale University, already one of the most respected centers of education in America, also enjoys the status of having one of the best art schools in America for undergraduate work. Yale offers courses for several areas of visual art and techniques, as well as art history ? a firm foundation for more intense graduate work.

The Art Institute of Chicago offers one of the most unique opportunities for interpolation of art education and history to be found. AIC is actually located INSIDE one of America?s finest museums offering an outstanding experience for those who relish saturation in their passion and discipline.

Cranbrook Academy of Art, located in southeast Michigan north of Detroit, has developed its reputation for modernism in architecture as well as many other genres in the field.

At Maryland Institute College of Art the primary focus (no pun intended), is on visual arts such as graphic design, illustration, animation, and video film. A graduate from MICA applying at Pixar or Disney would be well positioned for serious consideration.

Virginia Commonwealth University, a public college, offers some eighteen undergraduate majors from fine arts to many of the modern forms of digital and design. This is a quality education at a more affordable price. But, it?s not a shoe-in. Entrance is moderately difficult, so this is not for the student tenuous about a career in this field.

California Institute of the Arts is well-known as the first academy to offer programs in both visual and performing arts. This only makes sense since Hollywood is the entertainment industry?s capital. Majors are offered in fine arts, theater, dance and music.

Carnegie Melon University College of Art offers a well-rounded choice in schools of Art, Architecture, Design, Drama, and Music commensurate with CMU?s overall reputation.

University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) offers possibly the most interesting variety in majors at their School of Arts and Architecture. Majors in World Arts and Cultures, Ethnomusicology, and Urban Design are definitely for out-of-the-box thinkers looking for highly specialized careers.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."
