For plenty of Cleveland Browns, leaving Berea has meant the end of the line in the NFL.
You know the old line: If he can?t play for the Browns, he can?t play for anybody.
If it applied once, it doesn?t now.
You might be surprised by how many guys have traded in their orange helmets for another model.
Here is a look at where some players who had substantial runs in Cleveland are hanging out this summer.
? Wide receiver Brian Robiskie never got in a game for the Jaguars after the Browns cut him last October, but ...
In Jacksonville?s two preseason games (Giants, Saints), Robiskie has caught nine passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. He is listed at No. 3 at one of the wideout spots behind rookie Justin Blackmon and former Mount Union star Cecil Shorts.
? Quarterback Derek Anderson, 29, is the top backup (ahead of Jimmy Clausen) to Cam Newton in Carolina. In preseason outings against Texans and Dolphins backups, D.A. was a combined 14 of 27 for 206 yards.
? Linebacker Jason Trusnik made six tackles for the Dolphins in their preseason opener against the Bucs and was promoted to the starting lineup for Friday?s game at Carolina.
? Maybe Bill Belichick has a thing for people who were unappreciated in Cleveland. Belichick signed Gerard Warren as a free agent in 2010, then re-signed him as a free agent last August. ?Big Money? was a free agent again this past offseason.
Belichick signed him again April 30.
? Speedy running back Armond Smith, who raced 81 yards for a Browns TD in the 2011 preseason, ran eight times for 31 yards for the Panthers on Friday night against Miami.
? Mike Adams, 31, is starting at safety for the Broncos.
? Eric Wright, 27, is starting at cornerback for the Buccaneers.
? Eric Steinbach, 32, is backing up Richie Ingognito at left guard for the Dolphins.
? Lawrence Vickers, 29, is the No. 1 fullback for the Cowboys.
? Dallas lists Eric Mangini favorite Kenyon Coleman as its No. 1 left defensive end.
? Kamerion Wimbley, 28, is starting at defensive end for the Titans.
? Quarterback Brady Quinn is Matt Cassel?s top backup in Kansas City.
? Running back Peyton Hillis caught an 11-yard touchdown pass and made a 28-yard run during his first two preseason series as a Chief.
? Safety Abe Elam had a first-half interception for the Chiefs last week.
? Sean Jones, 30, is a backup safety with the Lions. He might have been exhausted after the preseason opener, in which he made nine tackles against the Browns.
? Punter Dave Zastudil had a strong 2011 with Arizona (45.2 yard average; compare that to Brad Maynard?s 40.5) after sitting out 2010 with a back problem.
? Safety Brodney Pool signed as a free agent with the Cowboys in March. He was cut Aug. 6.
Pool?s time with the Jets peaked Jan. 23, 2011, when he intercepted Ben Roethlisberger in the AFC title game against Pittsburgh.
? Matt Roth?s dreams of a big payday ? he talked about them openly as a 2010 Brown ? took a hit when he lost seven games to injury with the Jaguars in 2011. Going on 32, Roth is a free agent.
? It looks like the end for Shaun Rogers. The Giants signed the 33-year-old former Browns Pro Bowler in April, but he is expected to miss the season because of a blood clot in his left calf.
? Defensive end Jayme Mitchell, who started 13 games for the 2011 Browns, walked out of Tampa Bay?s camp Aug. 8, unhappy with his role.
ROCKS OF THE NORTH
A look at the tenures of head coaches of AFC North teams since 1999. Coaches who were with their teams before 1999 are credited for all games in their runs with the teams (playoff games included).
271 games: Bill Cowher, Steelers, 1992-2006
152 games: Brian Billick, Ravens, 1999-2007
147 games: Marvin Lewis, Bengals, 2003-present
88 games: Mike Tomlin, Steelers, 2007-present
73 games: John Harbaugh, Ravens, 2008-present
64 games: Romeo Crennel, Browns, 2005-08
60 games: Butch Davis, Browns, 2001-04
50 games: Bruce Coslet, Bengals, 1996-2000
45 games: Dick LeBeau, Bengals, 2000-02
32 games: Eric Mangini, Browns, 2009-10; Chris Palmer, Browns, 1999-2000
16 games: Pat Shurmur, Browns, 2011-present
Five games: Terry Robiskie, Browns, 2004
Not since Belichick
There should be a little extra buzz Friday night in Browns Stadium than one might sense in a normal preseason game.
For starters, it will be the first game at Browns Stadium since New Year?s Day, and the new hope, Brandon Weeden, will be making his home debut.
Beyond that ...
The Browns can be 3-0 in a preseason for the first time since a young Bill Belichick did it in 1994. It was Belichick?s only winning season in five years as Cleveland?s head coach. It was one of two postseasons the Browns have reached since the 1980s, and it was they only time they won a playoff game.
Belichick?s 2004 team went 11-5 after going 7-9 in 1993.
Extra points
? Browns coach Pat Shurmur is fired up about the six turnovers his defense has created in two preseason games. ?We struggled to get six in a month last year,? he said.
? Both the Browns and Packers were flagged for eight penalties in Green Bay. The Lions were flagged just once by a crew of replacement officials in Detroit.
? The headline said ...
?Elway: Peyton two Super Bowls away from being best ever.?
It says here ...
He will fall two Super Bowls short.
? Chad Johnson calls to mind the concept of simultaneously having it all and having nothing.
? One of the Browns who was on the field in Detroit said he didn?t really notice Ndamukong Suh while the game was going on. ?Then when I watched film,? the player told us, ?he never showed up.?
